Educational research in service may be defined as a field-oriented research doing by teachers or administrators, based on educational field. But most educational researches in service are not field-oriented, but positive-experimental, survey or action research. Namaly, they do mostly tend to be quantitative research. In order to sovlve the methodological problems and to increase the quality of research, researchers have to turn their concerns about research method from quantitative methods to qualitative ones. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find our the problem in educational research in service, to investigate the ethnographic research method, and to develop the research models suited to educational research in service. The qualitative ethnographic method does not concern about the discovery of the facts, but understanding of peoples behavior in a social situation. Ehtnographic researcher use all methods possible, gather and analize all kinds of data. The methods which can be involved in a ethnographic method are participant observation, in-depth interviewing, analysis of interaction, enumeration of records, mapping and charting, etc. The kind of data collected in a ehnographic method are individual records, diaries and jorunals, photographs, tape and video-audio recordings, documents, cultural artifacts, and sample data etc. Ethnographic research is not linear research pattern, but cyclical one. Observation, recording, and analysis are periodically recurrent. When researcher finds out new problem from the analysis of field notes, he returns to the field, observe and record. Finally he writes an ethnography a find report-from the observation data. The processes from doing participant observation to writing an ethnography are as follows : 1. Selecting the site 2. Doing participant observation 3. Making an ethnographic record 4. Making descriptive observation 5. Making a domain analysis 6. Making focused observation 7. Making a taxonomic analysis 8. Making selected observation 9. Making a componential analysis 10. Discovering cultural themes 11. Taking a cultural inventory 12. Writing an ethnography The characteristics of ethnographic method are long-term and intensive participant observation, non-experimental, holistic, open-ended, and exploratory. Its concers is to understand the meaning of people's behavior. The models in which ethnographic method are applied to educational research in service are as follows : 1. Ethnographic research by participant observation. 2. Research using together qualitive and quantitative method. 3. Cross-cultural research comparing one social situation or ethnography with another. 4. Research for the indigenization of educational theory using ethnographic method. 5. Ethnograpqhic mini-studies to find out the relationship between important vaiables in project planning.
