These days, DC distribution system is attracting attention as a promising technology to improve the efficiency of lighting system. In the case of DC-based lighting system, it is configured with the power conversion devices for DC supply, the energy meters for efficient energy operation, lighting loads, two cables. Since the power conversion device and the energy meter are composed of the power semiconductor which is vulnerable to the overcurrent. To protect such power semiconductor from overcurrent, these devices include the protective functions. However, the absence of protection coordination between the protective functions causes damage to power semiconductor and disrupts the continuity of power supply. Therefore, this paper analyzes the protective functions and fault characteristics of the DC lighting system, presents the problems caused by the absence of protective coordination, and proposes a countermeasure for coordination in the DC lighting system.

More efficient DC system compared to AC systems is receiving much attention as the increase of energy demand and DC load and the advance of power electronic technology. For the efficient operation of this DC power system within the limit of facilities and for the planning future power system, it needs that fast and accurate method to calculate bus voltage, power flow and losses. In this paper, therefore, the review of conventional power flow calculation method and assessment of the applicability of the DC system are performed for the calculation of power flow of the DC system. For this purpose, each power flow calculation method is modified considering characteristic of DC system. Finally, this paper shows the computer simulation using ElectroMagnetic Transients Program(EMTP) and MATLAB in order to evaluate the performance of the modified method.
