3D metrology is a technique measuring the object’s geometry in 3-dimensional space, which requires proper measurements according to the field’s requirement of precision, mobility, and safety. In that manner, 3D scanners are most commonly used for this purpose. On the other hand, in this paper, a laser-based distance-measuring system for automated logistic flow lines performing optimized loading in specific spaces such as a truck or warehouse. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system, several experiments are conducted with the sensor system which was installed on the conveyor belt, and various types of data were acquired through the transporting of actual logistics boxes. Several types of logistics boxes were made to attain robust performance and objectivity, and it is identified that the error of prediction with the proposed method is less than 1cm. The proposed idea in this research is promising in enhancing the shortcomings of existing 3D scanners from the view-point view point of practicality and cost perspective.
