Removal of epoxy resin from carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites via solvolysis

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have excellent characteristics of low density and high mechanical strength so that they have been used for several fields such as aerospace industry and aviation materials and so on. However, waste CFRP composites are difficult to be recycled because they contain thermosetting plastics such as epoxy resin. In this study, in order to remove epoxy resin from waste CFRP materials, they were treated with organic solvents along with sodium hydroxide with refulxing. Carbon fibers and epoxy resins were well-separated under the experimental conditions. Scanning electron microscopy images confirmed that the curing polymer resins have been totally removed from the carbon fibers. The removed organic materials were analyzed with GC/MS. The experimental results will be presented in detail.
Preparation of polyaniline coated polystyrene beads for adsorption of silver ions as nanoparticles

In this study, cross-linked polystyrene beads were synthesized by conventional free-radical suspension polymerization, and the resulting beads were subsequently coated by polyaniline via polymerization of aniline. Sieved polymer beads with outer diameter in the range of 0.5- 0.8 mm were used for the further study. The surface morphologies of the polymer beads before and after the coating were studied by SEM and TEM. The adsorption efficiency of the polymer beads toward silver ion as nanoparticles was studied at various different conditions: temperature, pH, concentration of silver ion, and contact time. The experimental results will be presented in details.
