The most common kind of vehicular accident is the low-speed rear-end impact that result in high portion of insurance claims and Whiplash Associated Disorders(WAD). The low-speed collisions have specific characteristics that differ from high speed collisions and must be treated differently. This paper presents a simple continuous contact force model for the low-speed rear-end impact to simulate the accelerations, velocities and the contact force as functions of time. A smoothed Coulomb friction force is used to represent the effect of braking, which was found to be significant in simulating low-speed rear end impact. The intervehicular contact force is modeled using nonlinear damping and spring elements with coefficients and exponents. This paper presents how to estimate analytically stiffness and damping coefficients. The exponent of the nonlinear contact force model was determined to match the overall acceleration pulse shape and magnitude. The model can be used to determine △Vs and peak accelerations for the purpose of accident reconstruction and for injury biomechanics studies.

Within the framework of brake-by-wire technology, this paper presents five types of novel models of electro-mechanical disk brake calipers with self-servo mechanism which provides self-servo effect of boosting a friction force generated between the brake pad and the rotor disk surface. The models have been developed utilizing patent map analysis results of previous invents of electro-mechanical brake calipers. The feasibility of the developed motor-driven brake caliper models have been validated through the dynamic simulation analysis. Among the developed models, the caliper mechanism with separated pressure plate was designed especially in detail and was made as a pilot. The pilot caliper has been installed on the simple test bed constructed with domestic passenger car brake components, and its function and effectiveness have been validated through several types of experimental tests.

In this paper, a planar model for mechanics of a vehicle/pedestrian collision incorporating road gradient is derived to evaluate the pre-collision speed of vehicle. It takes into account a few physical variables and parameters of popular wrap and forward projection collisions, which include horizontal distance traveled between primary and secondary impacts with the vehicle, launch angle, center-of-gravity height at launch, distance from launch to rest, pedestrian-ground drag factor, the pre-collision vehicle speed and road gradient. The model including road gradient is derived analytically for reconstruction of pedestrian collision accidents, and evaluates the vehicle speed from the pedestrian throw distance. The model coefficients have physical interpretations and are determined through direct calculation. This work shows that the road gradient has a significant effect on the evaluation of the vehicle speed and must be considered in accident cases with inclined road. In additions, foreign/domestic empirical cases and multibody dynamic simulation results are used to construct a least-squares fitted model that has the same structure of the analytical one that provides an estimate of the vehicle speed based on the pedestrian throw distance and the band within which the vehicle speed would be expected to be in 95% of cases.

This paper presents 3D collision deformation modelling methodologies using photogrammetry for reconstruction of vehicle accidents. A vehicle’s deformation shape in collision provides important information on how the vehicle collided. So effective measurement(scanning) and construction of a corresponding appropriate model are essential in the analysis of collision deformation shape for obtaining much information related to collision accident. Two measurement methods were used in this study: Indirect-photogrammetry which requires relatively small amount of photos or videos, and direct-photogrammetry which requires large amount of photos directly taken for the purpose of 3D modelling. When the indirect-photogrammetry method, which was mainly used in this study, lacked enough photographic information, already secured 2D numerical deformation data was used as a compensation. This made 3D collision deformation modelling for accident reconstruction analysis possible.

There will inevitably be errors and uncertainties in tire yaw mark related critical speed formula, which is derived merely from the relationship between the centrifugal force and the friction force acting on the point-mass vehicle. Constructing and measuring yaw marks through appropriate simulation works have made it possible to perform uncertainty analysis in calculation of critical speeds under variation of variety of conditions and parameters while existing yaw mark experimental tests have not performed properly. This paper does not present only the critical speed analysis results for parametric sensitivity and uncertainty of chord and middle ordinate, coefficient of friction and road grade, but also modeling uncertainty such as variation of braking level during turning and vehicle size. The yaw mark analysis methods and results may be now applied in practice of traffic accident investigation.
