Mat-buidling was first shown in 1974 article ‘How to recognize and read mat-building.’ by Alison Smithson. She summarized some characteristics of mat-building and listed various projects that can be though as mat-building among projects by team 10. There have been some of research, in recent years for the interest by contemporary architects, such as Rem Koolhaas, Kajuyo Sejima, MVRDV. However many of research was studied according special interest, so they lacks the total perspective about organization, concept and the connection between those two. This thesis will summarize key concepts and characteristics o mat-building based on previous researches and make an supplement to them. Eventually it will aim to find the problems and limits of mat-building.

1980∼1990년대 건축사조와 모던 건축의 관계에 대한 연구

Modern architecture revived again in 1990s against series of death by its opponents, Postmodernism and Deconstructivism. Though it is very interesting phenomenon, there were not many serious analyses about this rebirth of Modernism. This thesis will chase and analyse various theories and related categorizations by architectural historians and cultural theorists in broader extents. In doing so, this analyses will reveal various layers about characteristics of 1980~1990s modern architecture and its rebirth. It will also gives comprehensive understanding about the dynamic historical relations among Modernism, Postmodernism, Deconstructivism and architecture in 1980~1990.

존 케이지의 작품과 버나드 츄미의 라빌레뜨 공원 프로젝트의 비교 연구

One of the most provocative project in architecture history in 20<SUP>th</SUP> century was Bernard Tschumi’s La Villette. Some of researchers compared La Villette with Total Serialism in terms of their operation method of composition. However this comparison has a limit because it shows relationships between formal composition method only. For this limit, works by most influential 20<SUP>th</SUP> century american composer John case, give a light on more sophisticated comparison between music and architecture in 20<SUP>th</SUP> century. His works have so much similarities with La Villette with regard to form, compositional and operational method, and aesthetics, intentions as well. Furthermore minute differences between similar works in music and architecture will shows differences of level on which each system works.
