Vol.2009 No.4

Hybrid III 50th%ile dummy, generally used for frontal legal and NCAP tests, should be calibrated in order to improve the reliability of vehicle crash test results. There are many parameters that affect the responses of dummy such as head acceleration and chest deflection in calibration however temperature is one of the key parameters. So in this paper, we quantitatively investigate the variations of chest deflection on temperature changes to verify how it effects to the crash test results. Also we validate the low speed thorax impact and knee slider calibration procedures that are going to be issued by Euro NCAP, examining whether the behavior of chest deflection and knee slider are linear to the impact velocity.

      • Hybrid III 50th Percentile Featureless Headform

A special Hybrid III 50th Percentile headform is needed to perform the FMH Impact Test, which is one of the legal tests of North America. The Featureless Headform (i.e., a Hybrid III head without nose) should be used to cope with the US regulation that requires the headform’s forehead make initial contact with vehicle interior parts. To validate the headform’s effectiveness a head drop test is performed by means of evaluating its acceleration peak value after soaking the headform in a test environment for a period of at least 4 hours prior to the test. If the headform’s acceleration characteristic does not satisfy the requirement, a big loss cannot be evaded. So in order to eliminate this loss and to understand headform’s acceleration characteristics better, we first defines factors that affect the peak resultant acceleration of the headform when it is conducted the drop test and study how each factor affects the peak acceleration’s variance quantitatively using DOE and FE Analysis.

      • MPDB compatibility

Beginning in 1997, based on UN Regulation 94, Euro NCAP has been conducting a 40% offset deformable barrier crash test to assess frontal impact protection. As a result, vehicle manufacturers around the world have been striving to develop safety performance to improve frontal impact protection, but frontal impacts are steadily increasing the number of serious injuries and fatalities for passengers. Accordingly, Euro NCAP began developing a new frontal impact evaluation method from 2015 and will be implementing the most frequently occurring Car to Car frontal impact test mode (Mobile offset Progressive Deformable Barrier Frontal Impact Test) in 2020 by applying a new THOR (Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint) dummy to the driver's seat. MPDB test, a new frontal impact evaluation test, has implemented an improved vehicle structural evaluation through structural compatibility evaluation of not only collision vehicles but also relative collision vehicles compared to the current offset deformable barrier frontal impact test. In addition, by applying the next generation Test Device for Human Occupant THOR, the modified injury pattern can be realized more realistically due to the improvement of vehicle safety performance. This paper will introduce the development process of aggressiveness and compatibility evaluation method of MPDB in EuroNCAP which will be implemented from 2020. Several impact tests have been conducted at different test conditions to rate the vehicle structure performance only focused on aggressiveness and compatibility of MPDB.
