In this study, the homogeneization method is, used for estimating the med1an.ica1 properties of Light-weight composites. The method assumes the periodicity in the microscopic structure of composites and concludes that two types of equilibrium equations can be micro- and macro-scopically derived for periodic composites. As the results, homozeneized average displacements and mechanical properties of composites can be estimated without ant laborious experiments which is a major obstacle of employing new composites as structural materials. In addition, any microscopic failure such as interface debonding can be observed a priori.Key words: Light-weight composites. Homogeneization. Steering systea is a typical component that nay injure the driver at a frontal collision accident. To protect the driver from the impact, it is very impotant to study the impact absorbing characteristics of steering system. The dynamic simulation and the FMVSS 203 test were performed for the ball sleeve type impact absorbing steering systea of DaeWoo Motor Co.. The simulation result shows similar trend to FMVSS 203 test result. Hence using the simulation program developed in this study, it is possible to predict dynamic response of steering system which is used in design nodification. Impact absorbing performance of the ball sleeve type steering system with the column angle of 21 ° and 26° satisfies the safety criterion of FMVSS 203.<br/>
