In this paper, the most desirable or feasible cutting conditions for a reconfigurable micro milling machine were found or determined by using taguchi method. The objective of our cutting experiment is surface roughness - of the machined workpiece under the constant of equal removal rate during machining. Factors, in our study, are rotation speed, feed rate, cutting depth, and tool diameter. It was found that high cutting speed but small cutting depth can give comparable surface roughness with low cutting speed.

In this study, we designed a modular reconfigurable micro machine tool (MRmMT), which is reconfigurable from a milling machine to a lathe. Our machine tool consists of several module units; bed, column, spindle, slide units, tail stock, and controller. The reconfigurable machine tool developed in this study, demonstrated good machining abilities as a 3-axis milling machine as well as a turning lathe.
