The profiles of the second-order higher harmonics during B-H hysteresis loop have been measured as functions of the tensile stress in grain-oriented 3.2% Si steels. The observed harmonics profiles have been analyzed in terms of the nonlinear, asymmetric magnetization which reflects the domain reorientation under the field. The field interval of the second-order higher harmonics is related to the nucleation and annihilation fields and a measurement method for the magnetostriction is proposed using the harmonics profiles under tensile stress.

The phase transformation of mixture of Y₂O₃, BaCO₃ and CuO powders with mole ratio of 1/2 : 2 : 3 and that of the superconducting Y₁Ba₂Cu₃Oy single phase were investigated by thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis between the temperature ranges of 20℃ and 1300℃. Above 1010℃, partial melting and phase decomposition of Y₁Ba₂Cu₃Oy single phase was detected and it was found that the new phases were (Y₂BaCuO_5) and BaCuO₂by SEM -EDX. By considering the change of the thermal expansion coefficient of the superconductor bar with temperature, it was concluded that superconducting Y₁Ba₂Cu₃Oy undergoes phase transformation at 400℃ and 700℃.

The effects of Sn addition on the core loss of a non-oriented electrical steel containing 3.1wt% Si were investigated in the range of 0.20-0.70㎜ in thickness and 50-400㎐ in frequency. When a small amount of Sn was added to the steel, it was not only segregated on grain boundaries, resulting in smaller microstructure, but also enhanced texture development favorable to magnetic properties. Due to these phenomena, the addition of Sn is found to be effective in reducing the core loss, especially the eddy current loss, at higher frequency and thinner gauge.

Thickness and frequency dependence of core loss in the non-oriented electrical steel containing 3.1wt% Si was investigated in the range of 0.20-0.70㎜ in thickness and 50-400㎐ in frequency. As the specimen becomes thinner, the eddy current loss decreases whereas the hysteresis loss increases. Due to this phenomenon, there exists a thickness where the minimum core losss can be otained at a given frequency. The portion of eddy current loss in the core loss increases with frequency, and this tendency becomes more prominent in thicker specimen. The respective portions of eddy current and hysteresis loss are found to be dependent on specimen thickness and test frequency.
