Automotive seat comfort has been considered as one of the most important issues in automotive seat industry, because the seat is directly related to human feelings, activities, and safety. Recent interest in the design of comfortable seat requires the robustness of comfort level depending on the occupant characteristics. In the present study, we attempt to investigate how the occupants body type affect the pressure distribution characteristics and the perceived comfort level. Pressure distribution is especially import in this regards, because the data comes out of the interaction between the occupant subject and the tested seat. For the present study, both objective physical parameter evaluation and the subjective tests are conducted for a selected 49 subjects and the results are discussed. Subjects are further grouped based on their weight and height to segregate the body-type. Five pressure related physical parameters, that is, mean pressure, contact area, maximum pressure, minimum pressure, and seat pressure distribution(SPD) are considerd for the discussion with the selected comfort query, ’hip and thigh comfort’. Through the present study, robust comfort design could be identified successfully by considering the subject body type as an additional influencing parameter on top of the overall subjective test. According to the present study results, body-type of ’light & short(group I)’ showed least sensitivity, while ’light & tall(group II) showed most sensitivity in the seat comfort evaluation.

In this study, emotional adjectives about the operating sound quality of the vehicle power seat are constructed, and the effectiveness of the emotional adjectives are verified by evaluating the operating sound quality. First, emotional adjectives were collected from the literature related to the automobile field and other sound qualities. A questionnaire was made using these adjectives. The questionnaire was designed to be able to select all adjectives that could express the operating noise of the power seat slide adjuster by applying the multiple- response method. Next, a subjective sound quality evaluation was conducted using the emotional adjectives. In the evaluation, we first recorded the operating noise for two power seats. Second, the subjective sound quality evaluation was performed on the recorded operating noise using a loudspeaker. Finally, through a statistical analysis on the sound quality evaluation results, the relationship between the semantic space and the preference score was verified, and the validity of the emotional adjectives was verified.
