This experiment was carried out to investigate feeding value of 4% anhydrous ammonia (NH₃-RS) and 4% sodium hydroxide treated rice straw NaOH-RS) on the performance of 12 Holstein young bulls. Also nutrient digestibility and ruminal pH as influenced by dietary treatment were determined in sheep. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Ammonia treatment increased crude protein content of rice straw by 2 times (9.8% vs 4.2%). Ammonia and sodium hydroxide treatment reduced NDF and ADF content of rice straw. 2. Rice straw intake by Holstein bulls was increased by 20% by ammonia treatment (p$lt;0.0 5). 3. Daily gain were increased by ammonia (18%) and NaOH treatment (8.6%), respectively, over the U-RS group, without significant difference among treatment. 4. Ruminal PH was slightly difference among treatment, but there was no significance. 5. Dry matter and crude fiber digestibilities of NH₃-RS and NaOH-RS were significantly higher than those of U-RS. No difference, however, in crude protein digestibilities was found among treatment. 6. Daily net income except labour per head was 2110 Won in NH₃-RS and 1850 Won in NaOH-RS, and 1780 Won in U-RS. More net income (330 Won /head) was made in NH₃-RS group.
