Recently, countries around the world have been strengthening energy regulations to cope with climate change. Along with this trend, the regulations for home appliances are getting more tightened, and a great deal of efforts are being made to improve energy efficiency of clothes dryer. There have been studies on the effect of leakage for the vented-type clothes dryer, while little attentions have been paid to the effect of the locations of leakage on the performance for heat pump dryers. The present study aims to address the effect of the locations of leakage on the performance, i.e. drying time and energy consumption, for heat pump dryers using the analytical model combining heat and mass transfer inside drum and refrigeration cycle. A dimensionless parameter was suggested to qualitatively predict the effect of the positions of leak-in and leak-out of air for the dryer system. As a result, it was found that the drying performance was considerably affected by the location of leakage, and there exists a correlation between the dryer performance and the suggested dimensionless parameter. It is expected that the result of the present study would be helpful improving energy efficiency when designing a heat pump clothes dryer.
