Based on field and laboratory observations, the long term durability of EPS blocks used for bridge backfill was described on this study. The unit weight, compressive strength, water absorption, and variation in density were evaluated for the EPS blocks retrieved from existing backfill constructed 10 years ago. The study is aimed at the variation of material degradation of EPS blocks over time. In Additions, it is preliminary surveys for reuse or recycling of EPS block long time after construction when EPS embankment are widened or rehabilitated. From the survey, there were a little contraction in dimension of EPS block. Compressive strength showed slightly lower or higher value than that of new EPS block. However there was no signs of material deterioration for other physical and chemical properties. Although the material deterioration of EPS blocks retrieved from existing backfill was not clearly shown due to several reasons, further examinations on these matters will be required.

A series of tests was performed to determine a threshold concentration of water-soluble organic permeant(ethanol) for permeability to be increased in clay and to estimate long-term permeability behaviors, effects of overburden pressure and compaction conditions on permeability in clay. Results of study are as follows ; 1. A threshold concentration of water-soluble organic permeant(ethanol) in clay was about 70~80% and its dielectric constant was 40, and dielectric constant seems to be closely related with absolute permeability. 2. Permeability of long-term tests was more or less larger than that of short-term tests. 3. Overburden pressures applied for ~ long time elapsed have little effects on the restriction of permeability increase. 4. Since water content has no effects of compaction capability when it is compacted with OMC or wet side of OMC, its permeability is to be estimated as same level of dry side of OMC. 5. Clays matured in the humid chamber are increased in permeability 2 times larger than unmatured ones. Thixotropy, therefore, should be considered in the design procedures because field conditions of construction would be quite similar to this.
