The effects of fuel injection timing on lean misfire limit has been investigated in a sequential MPI SI engine. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, so called axial stratification phenomena, 4 different swirl inducing intake ports have been tested in single cylinder engine test bench. And 2 kinds of fuel, gasoline and compressed natural gas(CNG), were used to see the effect of liquid fuel vaparization. Result shows that the combination of port swirl ratios and injecton timimg governs the lean misfire limit and lean misfire limit envelopes reamain alomost same for a given swirl ratios regardless of engine speed. It is also found that two phase flow has some effects on lean misfire limit ,i.e. axial stratification.<br/>

To understand the effects of turbulence on combustion, it was experimentally investigated in the combustion chamber with sub-chamber by using pressure record and high speed Schlieren motion picture.<br/> The results show that turbulence can increase the flame propagating rate and there exists a condition under which the total burning time becomes the minimum. And it was also found that there exist three kinds of flame propagating pattern and the total burning time can be reduced with the appropriate selection of sub-chamber size and orifice diameter.

Combustion characteristics of opposed jet-flames spouting out from dual prechambers of a divided combustion chamber were investigated by using high speed schilieren photography and chamber pressure measurement.<br/> Result shows that opposedjet-f1ames are characterized by the parameter (A_ori/V_p) and there exists a certain critical value of (A_ori/V_p)_c which distinguishes flame propagation patterns in the main chamber. Also higher chamber pressure and shorter total burning time can be derived by adopting this dual prechamber divided combustion chamber, which would lead a possibility of an appropriate combustion method of high load and low emmissions.
