1780년에서 1830년 사이의 영국은 명예혁명 이후 약 1세기 정도 지속된 사회적 안정이 서서히 와해되면서, 긴 시간 축적되어 온 기층의 불만과 요구들이 급격하고 복잡하게 부상한 시기였다. 이러한 상황에서 영국의 지배 권력은 국가 권력을 향한 적대행위를 광기로 명명하고 구분하는 방법을 통해 사회적 혼란을 통제하고 급진적 목소리들을 침묵시키려고 시도했다. 그러나 전문적인 지식과 실용적인 기술의 부재로 인해 국가와 지배집단의 전략은 큰 사회적 실효를 거두지 못하고 있었다. `광기 관리` 영역에서 가정과 지역공동체의 전통적 역할이 축소되거나 시장으로 이전되면서 급격하게 성장한 `광기 매매` 시장은 권력의 사회통제 전략과 적절히 조응했다. 새로운 수용소 제도와 정신의학을 중심으로 한 그와 같은 광기 관리의 기구화와 의료화는 광기 영역의 세속화와 전문화의 구체적인 양상이었다. 조나단 마틴의 삶과 그의 1829년 요크대성당 방화사건은 그와 같은 19세기 초 영국의 정치적 상황과 새로운 광기관리 체제의 특징들을 잘 반영하고 있었다. In England, from 1780 to 1830, the social stability that had endured during a century after the Glorious Revolution was deteriorating, and the grievances and needs from the bottom that had accumulated for a long time were erupting in complicated patterns. The Establishment of England tried to label and differentiate the threats against itself as `madness` in order to control the social disorder and silence the radical voices. However, the strategies of the state and ruling power failed to achieve satisfactory results, due to the absence of specialized knowledge and practical techniques. It was the `mad-trade` market, which developed rapidly after the decline of the traditional role of family and community in the treatment of madness, that corresponded to the social control strategies of the state power. The institutionalization and medicalization of the treatment of madness centered on asylum system and psychiatry were the specific aspects of the secularization and professionalization in the field of madness. The life of Jonathan Martin and the incendiarism of York Minster in 1829 reflect such political circumstances and the new system of the treatment of madness in early 19th century England.
