본 연구는 제주도 자연 생태계의 대명사격인 곶자왈에 대한 제주도민들의 인식과 이용실태를 단계적으로 고찰한 것이다. 최근에 이르러 곶자왈은 제주도의 허파이자 지하수의 함양공간으로 크게 부각되고 있으며, 동시에 제주도의 소중한 숲이자, 희귀한 자연자원으로서 보전 가치가 높은 곳으로 평가되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 제주도민들의 인식 정도에 따라 곶자왈의 이용실태에 초점을 맞추어 논의하였는데, 결과적으로 곶자왈의 이용은 과거선조들의 이용하는 방식인 1차적 이용(소극적 이용)과 2차적 이용(적극적 이용), 그리고 현세대들이 주로 이용하는 방식인 3차적 이용(파괴적 이용)으로 구분할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 곶자왈의 이용방식은 2차적 이용의 적극적 이용이나 3차적 이용의 파괴적 이용보다는 1차적 이용의 소극적 이용이어야만 지속적인 보전과 활용이 가능하다고 지적할 수 있다. This study intends to consider Jeju island residents`` perception and use of Gotjawal which is a byword for the natural ecology in Jeju island, Recently, Gotjawal has been significantly emphasized as an air cleaner as well as a groundwater recharging space in Jeju island, and evaluated as a place with a high conservative value as a precious forest as well as a very important natural resource in Jeju island. This study provides the discussion focusing on the status of Jeju island residents`` use of Gotjawal according to the level of their perception, and as a result, the use of Gotjawal can be classified into the 1st use (Passive use) and the 2nd use (Active use) which were mainly used by the ancestors in the past and the 3rd use (Destructive use) which is mainly used by the current generation. In conclusion, this study points out that continuous preservation and utilization of Gotjawal will be only possible through the 1st use (Passive use) rather than the 2nd use (Active use) or the 3rd use (Destructive use).
