        The purpose of this study was to examine the parents` awareness of the after-school programs in special schools for children with mental retardation. The subjects in this study were 150 parents in special schools for children with mental retardation in Busan and Gyeong-nam province. After a survey was conducted, the responses from 140 parents were finally selected. The findings of the study were as follows: Concerning the parents` awareness of after-school programs, the best benefit of the programs was that it`s possible to take care of students from double-income families, and many of the parents felt the need for the programs. They preferred the kind of after-school programs that could improve the special talent of students, and they were in want of the programs during the semester and vacation. They wanted each program to be attended by less than five students, and to be conducted by outside experts. A lot of the parents expressed satisfaction with after-school programs, and felt that the programs contributed to curtailing private education spending and improving their children`s special talent. Given the findings of the study, it`s required to set up a precise evaluation system, and expert lecturers should be assured to take the quality of education to another level.
