As interest in sustainable and eco-friendly energy increases, demand for hydrogen energy is also increasing. Hydrogenogenic CO oxidation (CO + H₂O → CO₂ + H₂) has the potential for H₂ production as a clean renewable fuel. In this study, it was developed economic biological hydrogen technology utilizing renewable resources such as industrial by-product gas including carbon monoxide, using the Thermococcus Onnurineus NA1. Pilot plant was designed and constructed in order to convert from CO in LDG which is a by-product gas of steel mill to H₂ and implemented the technology through demonstration. 2.4 Nm³/h of LDG was continuously supplied to 1t culture medium reaction tank. As a result, 97% CO gas in LDG was converted into hydrogen gas and hydrogen content in the product gas is 40% or more. The purity of product gas was increased to 99.9% hydrogen gas by PSA. The high purity hydrogen gas was successively used to generate electricity by fuel cell system which has developed in Hyundai Steel. This results is the first demonstration of H₂ production from steel mill by-product gas by a carboxydotrophic hydrogenogenic microbe.
Coating Durability of Metal Bipolar plate for Low Temperature PEMFC

The development of bipolar plate having high efficiency and chemical properties has a major impact on fuel cell applications commercialization. Even though graphite bipolar plate has high electric conductivity and chemical resistance, it has demerits about mass production and brittle property for commercialization. Hence, metallic bipolar plate can be substitute for fuel cell bipolar plate. Although its inadequate corrosion behavior under PEMFC environment lead to a deterioration of membrane by dissolved metal ions, metallic bipolar plate for PEMFC is more suitable for automotive and residential power generation system because of its high mechanical strength, low gas permeability and applicability to mass production. Therefore, several types of coating has been applied to prevent corrosion and oxide film growth and to achieve more high durability. This work presents durability of coated metal bipolar plate for low temperature PEMFC which made for fuel cell vehicle. This results showed surface treatment increase long-term durability, even electric conductivity and corrosion resistance.

Hot blast stove is a heat regenerative plant, where by-product gas from the steel process is used to heat up the bulk body of chequerbrick, then hot blast is generated by blowing cold blast through the pre-heated chequerbrick. Since the composition of by-product fluctuates according to the steel process, it is important to control and suppress the effect of fuel composition for stable operation. In this regard, we developed an one-dimensional dynamic model for understanding the dynamic behavior of the hot blast stove. For this, we solved the compressible flow equation numerically, then modeled diffusion, friction, radiation and convection heat transfer. The computational result from the model was compared to the measurment from the real plant of Hyundai-steel in Dang-Jin Si, and found to be reliable around the typical operating point.
