Vol.2008 No.11
We investigated term structure models for commodity prices to value derivative-linked securities(DLS) traded in Korea. We especially highlighted geometric Brownian motion(GBM) model considering storage costs and a convenience yield and Schwartz model reflecting mean-reverting property. One of key characteristics of the paper is that this paper provides theoretical models for multi underlying assets and the model combining GBM model and Schwartz model. Furthermore, it gives us an analysis for quanto adjustment which occurs in the valuation of DLS. In case of GBM model, quanto adjustment seems to be relatively simple by adjusting a constant ratio to risk-free interest rate. Unlike GBM model, we find out that, in case of Schwartz model, such adjustment can be achieved only when the stochastic process of foreign exchange rate is considered. After having valuation, both models show stable results for DLS prices using WTI index as an underlying asset. However, they results in outcomes, which are relatively not stable, on valuing DLS written on multi underlying assets including nickel.

The exchange rate pass-through is non-linear and asymmetric unlike the standard models. The asymmetric effects of exchange rate changes can be explained using the quantity constraint model and the market share model. To explain the non-linear effects the menu cost and switching cost in consumption were assumed. This study tests the asymmetry and non-linearity assumptions in the effects of exchange rate changes on the export prices of manufacturing goods. We estimated the export price as functions of the exchange rate with interactive dummy variables reflecting the various situations. The results suggest that especially asymmetries in exchange rate pass-through cannot be ignored. In the pre-crisis the price effect of won appreciation was greater than that of won depreciation as the quantity constraint model says, but after the crisis the result was reversed suggesting the market share model is appropriate.
Optimal portfolio selection with transaction costs when an illiquid asset pays cash dividends
Vol.44 No.1
We investigate an optimal portfolio selection problem withtransaction costs when an iliquid aset pays cash dividend s and there areconstraints on the iliquid aset holding. We provide close d form solutionsfor the problem, and by using these solutions we ilustrate i nterestingfeatures of optimal policies.

This article is a study on the pass-through of exchange rate in Korean Manufactures. The export prices. import prices and exchange rates are nonstationary I(1) variables, the cointegrations between export prices and exchange rate, and between import prices and exchange rate do not exist. So we use the VAR model to analyse the pass-through. In the export of manufactures the long-run degree of pass-through of exchange rate is 69.5-74.6%, export price is adjusted during above 8 quarters. In the import of manufactures it is about 93.3-94.4%, nearly perfect pass-through. import price is adjusted in 4 quarters. The relative contribution of the exchange rate shocks to export price fluctuations, at a 8 quarters horizon, is about one third, but at a 4 quarters horizon. the relative contribution to import price fluctuations is about two thirds.
