        상투에 관한 고찰

        임윤정(Lim Youn-Jung),전혜숙(Chun Hea-Sook) 한복문화학회 2010 韓服文化 Vol.13 No.3

It was a symbol of conventional Confucianism culture to be representative too that was a head form of the choson Dynasty period our country men, and conventional head was a head form to be general of our country men from the ancient times. The topknot is the men's hair style of ancient chosun countries. In the ancient Chinese literature, Sagi, the topknot is written as 'tae-gyeol'. In hanshu(漢書), huhanshu(後漢書), Samkukgee(三國志), and Jinshu(晉書) it is also written as 'chu-gyeol', 'quae-gyeol', 'quaedoonogae' and 'quadoonogae'. When the words are looked up in the dictionary we find that 'chu-gyeol'means a written as 'tae'. therefore, 'chu-gyeol', 'chu-gae' and 'tae-gyeol' all have the same meaning. 'Quaedoo' and 'quadoo' have the same meaning as 'gaey'. Thus 'quaedoonogaey' and 'quadoonogaey' mean to show the topknot openly without wearing a hat. As shown above, the 'chu-gyeol' is used to describe the authentic mean's hair style of the Chosun Dynasty, as different from the men's hair style of the Chinese Han Dynasty. While there are difference in the words to describe the two hair style:'chu-gyeol', 'quadoo', 'quaedoonogaey' and 'quadoonogaey' are all used to mean the topknot hair style.

        19세기말 단발령과 상투에 관한 연구

        임윤정(Lim Youn-Jung),전혜숙(Chun Hea-Sook) 한복문화학회 2011 韓服文化 Vol.14 No.2

In the late 19th period the pro-Japanese Kim Hong Jip government of choson promulgated the Ordinance Prohibiting Topknots which was in fact forced by Japanese imperialists to the then king of choson Gojong. This move caused severe resistance from all classes of the country ranging from the ruling power to the public even provoking the uprising of voluntary militants to fight against the Japanese imperialism. How choson's intellects of that time perceived the ordinance can be found in their written public appeals manifestos. According to these materials those intellects thought that the ordinance was a disgraceful policy forced to choson under the pressure of Japan. They also thought that the policy would collapse their country's Confucian tradition customs and culture and national identity based on respect for coutesy ultimately making choson a bestial nation. Underlying the foresaid thoughts was a notion based on the Sung Confucianism that national enlightenment and foreign trade are like evils and will result in the collapse of choson's precious traditional culture which has followed the culture of China and oriented the so-called minor Sino-centralism. Among those intellects especially those who belonged to the Hwaseo school formed voluntary militants claiming that cutting topknots was like making civilized people barbarian. In conclusion this study found that in the choson period topknots were not just the most representative hair style of men but the symbol of Confucian culture national spirit and identity and even the ideological and political powers of the country.

      • 1920년대 여성운동과 단발에 관하여

전혜숙,임윤정 東亞大學校 附設 生活科學硏究所 2003 생활과학연구 논문집 Vol.11 No.-

Women's hair style expresses individual women's aesthetic sense, way of thinking and consciousness and further represents social aspects. It provides information about situations of a relevant society and times and values members of the society have. Hair style was also used as a measure for evaluating behaviors of women who received modern education in the period of Chosun's modernization, collectively called 'the new woman'. The new woman who were educated with modern ideas, started women's movements with Western ideas based in order to resolve Japanese colonial rule. Thus the purpose of this study is to determine correlations between such women as participants of the movements and their short-hair(斷髮). Results of the study can be described as follows. First, changes in the view of woman brought by modern education for women led to changes in women's social position and roles, forming a new group of women, collectively called 'the new woman', who took modern education and modern ideas in the 1920s. Women's movements made by group during Japanese colonial rule were different among them according to whether they were based on liberalism or socialism. Second, correlations between feminists and their short-hair(斷髮) varied in accordance with characteristics of women's movements. For liberal feminists, short-hair(斷髮) represented love and faithfulness and at the same time symbolized advanced social position of women and innovated consciousness of life. As far as social feminists were concerned, short-hair(斷髮) was a means of showing their strong wills to achieving women's emancipation, obtaining women's rights and escaping from conventional systems suppressing women. Those feminists returned to long-hair(長髮) in the late 1920s as their short-hair(斷髮) was not socially accepted and supported by old women. This suggests the limit of women's movements at that time. Through the study, this researcher could find that changes in hair style were not just the expression of desires for beauty, but also the clue with which changes in social consciousness could be determined.
