Tan's failure criterion for predicting the strength of fibrous anisotropic materials by expanding the strength function in Fourier series is reviewed. More efficient and simple method to obtain the strength of the lamina is presented. It is based on the use of the theoretical normal and shear stresses on a plane oriented to the loading axis in uniaxially loaded plate. The accuracy of the method is justified through comparison with experimental data. The main feature of the present method is that it does not need the off-axis tension test.

A general failure criterion for fibrous composites under combined stress is developed in the paper. It is based on the form of Tsai-Hill's theory. Predicted results are compared throughout all four quadrants with experimental data. Present theory predicts observation quite well at the higher values of shear stress where Tsai-Hill theory becomes too conservative.

In the present study, the problem of an infinite anisotropic plate with an inclined crack subjected to a biaxial load is analyzed. It is assumed that the material is ideal homogeneous anisotropic body. By considering the effect of the load applied parallel to a horizontal plane of the plate, the distribution of stresses at the crack tip is reanalyzed. In addition the problem of predicting crack propagation in anisotropic solids which is a subject of considerable practical importance is examined. The effect of load biaxiality on the direction of initial crack extension is made explicitly.

In the particular situations where the crack is terminated at an interface of two materials, the order of stress singularity depends on the elastic constants which specify the properties of two materials. A multidomain boundary element technique is used to solve a crack normal to bimaterial interface. A correct order of shape function is used for displacement by using the isoparametric elements by shifting adequately the side nodes adjacent to this crack tip. A shape function containing the same order of singularity as that in the interface crack is also used for the interpolation of traction. Numerical testing of a bimaterial with a crack normal to the interface is carried out with three-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.

A method for the retardation of fatigue crack growth using ring indentation at the vicinity of a crack is examined. Residual stresses near crack tip are evaluated suing gracture mechanics approach. The motivation is to develop a simple and effective method for obtaining an increase in fatigue lives to total failure of materials with crack. Fatigue testing of aluminum specimen showed that the retardation effects are observed after the application of the method.

2축하중을 받는 이방성균열체에 대하여 해석을 수행하였다. 재료는 균질이방성체라고 가정하였다. 균열선단주위의 응력분포에 대한 급수전개식에서 2차항을 고려하여 응력식을 산출하였으며 이의 2차항은 균열성장각도의 정확한 예측을 위해서 매우 중요함을 보였다. 균열진전각도의 결정을 위해서 수직응력비 이론을 적용하였으며 넓은 범위의 작용하중에 대하여 해석을 수행하였다.
