In this study, a phase change heat dissipation device was developed to reduce the cost of one-to-one replacement of metal halide lamps with LEDs while recycling existing streetlight fixtures. Specifically, an aluminum-based flat shaped phase change device and its U shaped transforming technology were developed to achieve limited size, light weight, low price, and high thermal performance according to the recycling of existing streetlight fixture. Through the isothermal characteristic evaluation of the flat shaped phase change device having a non-heat transfer channel for connecting with the housing of the 100W LED module, the temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser was evaluated to have a thermal resistance of less than 1.55oC. It was evaluated that a maximum of 70.5W could be dissipated under natural convection environmental condition through a phase change device combining inner and outer cooling fins and transforming into a U shape. Considering the design of parallel connection of the 33W U shaped phase change device for heat dissipation of the 100W LED lamp, it was evaluated that it could be utilized within the thermal design allowable limit.
