The physically based distributed modelling system, MIKE SHE, has been applied to the upper sub-watershed of the Gyeongancheon watershed. A horizontal grid square was constructed to represent the spatial variations in watershed characteristics, landuse, soil, and rainfall distributions. The hydraulic model MIKE 11 was also coupled with the MIKE SHE to simulate river flow in the main and tributaries of Gyeongancheon. The simulated daily stream flow at the outlet of the watershed was compared to the observed data for the period of 1988 to 1991. The results demonstrated the applicability of a comprehensive hydrological modelling system as management tool for watershed and flood plain.

The objectives of the research were to modify and validate a daily water balance model, DIROM, for irrigation reservoirs using field data, and to estimate daily water supply from the reservoirs in the Han river basin. Modified DIROM was applied to three test sites, and validated with field data. The relative errors between the simulated and observed water supply were less than 10 percent. Historical records on daily or ten-day’s storage for 110 reservoirs from the twenty Farmland Improvement Associations, FIA were collected and used to estimate the daily water supply during 1993 to 1997. The results were applied to the other 723 reservoirs that are not owned by FIA. The five-year averaged annual water supply from the reservoirs was estimated to be 180 million ㎥/yr. Maximum yearly water supply was recorded to be 190 million ㎥/yr in 1996.

Fecal coliform bacteria is one of the most common cause of water quality impairments in Virginia, USA. Instream concentrations of fecal coliform(FC) bacteria were routinely monitored to assess surface water quality of the Polecat Creek watershed. Median concentrationin water samples collected from 1995 to 2000 ranged from 80cfu/100mL to 170 cfu/100 mL, while geometric mean concentrations ranged from 81 cfu/100 mL to 141 cfu/100 mL. The dilution and deposition by Lake Caroline may cause to lower FC concentration at monitoring site QPB, as compared FC condentration at QPD. Higher in-stream FC consentration occured during the summer period (June-August), and lower concentration typically occured during the winter (December-February). This is due to more cattle in streams, and greater survival and regrowth of FC bacteria under warmer condition. The findings of this study can be helpful in planning the water quality monitoring program to avod the inaccurate assessment of water quality due to the timing of sample collection.

The purpose of this study were to monitor rainfall and runoff data from paddy blocks and forest areas at the Balan Experimental Watershed, and to investigate the variations of runoff characteristics with different land use. Field data showed that the total runoff from paddies and forest areas are not significantly different in volume. The peak discharge from forest areas was less than that from paddies for lighter storms, but became greater for heavier storms. The results demonstrate that paddies play an important role to reduce peak discharge from heavy storms as compared to forest.

Potential impacts for unfavourable weather conditions and the assessment of the magnitudes of their adverse effects on crop yields were studied. EPIC model was investigated for its capability on crop yield predictions for rice and soybean. Weather generation model was used to generate long-term climatic data. The model was verified with observed climate data of Suwon city. Fifty years weather data including abnormal conditions were generated and used for crop yield simulation by EPIC model. Crop yield probability function was derived from simulated crop yield data, which followed normal distribution. Probable crop yield reductions due to abnormal weather conditions were also analyzed.

Rainfall and runoff data from a forested watershed and irrigated rice paddies at the Bal-an experimental watershed were monitored and analyzed to investigate the variations of runoff characteristics with different land use. The comparisons were conducted fourteen storm events ranging 21.8∼190.2 mm of rainfall. Field data showed that direct runoff from paddies and forested watershed are not significantly different in volume. The peak discharge from forest watershed was less than that from paddies far lighter storms, but became greater fur heavier storms. The peak runoff from the forest watershed was 39 percent greater than from the paddies. The results demonstrate that paddies play an important role to reduce peak discharge from heavy storms as compared to forest.
