The International Affective Picture System(IAPS) developed by Lang and colleagues[1] is a world-widely adopted tool in studices relating a variety of physiological indices to subjective emotions induced by the presentation of standardized pictures of which subjective ratings are well established in the three dimensions of pleasure, arousal and dominance. In the present study we investigated whether distinctive EEG characteristics for six discrete emotions can be discernible using 12 IAPS pictures that scored highest subjective ratings for one of the 6 categorical emotions, i.e., happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, and surprise (Two slides for each emotion). These pictures as visual stimuli were randomly given to 38 right-handed college students (20~26 years old) with 30 sec of exposure time and 30 sec of inter-stimulus interval for each picture while EEG signals were recorded from F3, F4, O1, and O2 referenced to linked ears. The FFT technique were used to analyze the acquired EEG data. There were significant differences in RP value changes of EEG bands, most prominent in theta, between positive and negative emotions, and partial also among negative emotions. This result is in agreement with previous studies[2, 3]. However, it requires further studied to decided whether IAPS could be a useful tool for categorical approaches to emotion in addition to its traditional use, namely dimensional approaches to emotion.
시각 자극에 의하여 유발된 긍/부정 정서의 뇌파 및 자율신경계 반응의 차이

Autonomic and EEG responses of 38 college students were studied during 60-sec long presentation of International Affective Picture System (IAPS)slides evoking, according to subjective reports, negative (disgust, sadness, surprise) and positive (happiness, exciting) emotional states. Observed were significant heart rate (HR) deceleration, large skin conductance responses (SCR), moderate respiration frequency slowing, reduction of frontal (F3, F4 ) and occipital (O1, O2 ) fast alpha, and increases of theta, delta and beta relative spectral power values during the first 30 sec of exposure of IAPS pictures. Analysis carried out to differentiate emotion categories according to autonomic responses indicated that observed HR deceleration was larger in magnitude in surprise and sadness than in disgust, SCR amplitude higher in sadness than in disgust. EEC showed significant differences in theta (F3, F4 ) and delta (O1) power increase in disgust vs. happiness, fast alpha (F3, F4 ) power was lower in surprise than in happiness, and slow beta power higher. in happiness than in disgust (01). Despite some differences. observed within discrete emotion conditions, overall responses pattern of monitored parameters exhibited similar profiles with few variations, most. obvious. in disgust state, which suggests that affective visual stimulation elicits stereotypical responses in a given passive viewing paradigm. However, the magnitude of physiological responses may vary to certain extent across discrete emotional states making it possible to differentiate among particular experimentally-induced emotional states, e.g., disgust vs. sadness by ANS responses or disgust vs. happiness by EEG measures. Korean constitutional type(Sasang Chejil) was considered with anxiety level and personality type in order variability frequently encountered in EEG research. Sasang Chejil type seems a very important factor to be controled to minimize the variabilty since Sasang Cheji subgroups showed distinct differences in EEG relative power ao more recording sites and frequency bands than the subgroups of anxiety level and personality type, well-reconized variability-contribution factors. It is likely that Tae-Eum Chejil type is predispositioned to be more relaxed and feel happier and less unhappy than So-Yang type since the former showed greater alpha relative powers and left-hemisphere activations at both of the resting and emotional states.
시각자극에 의해 유발된 스트레스 생리반응의 회복과정에 미치는 정서청각자극의 효과

Effects of the music and white noise on recovery of the autonomic and cortical responses evoked by aversive visual stimulation were analyzed in 20 subjects. It was suggested that the music is able to exert modulatory influence on the physiological activity resulted from exposure to unpleasant IAPS based stimuli. Spectral power of DDG, heart rate(HR)respiration rate (RSR) and electrodermal activity(EDA)were recorded and analyzed for each experimental condition. It was observed HR and RSR deceleration, increased EDA and electrocortical activation expressed in decreased alpha power and increase of delta activity ao occipital and frontal areas. Obtained results suggest that audutory stimulation both with pleasant and sad music lead to restoration of pre-stimulation activation levels of most physiological parameters during listenning to music and in post-stimulation period. White noise evoked short-term physiological responses typical for orienting reaction and quite distinct from changes produced by music. Available data to differentiate effeces among pleasant and sad music, due toqualitative similarities of physilolgical patterns, but suppert an assumption that music is capable to facilitate the process of recovery of physilolgical responses elicited by visual stimulation of negative valence, thus positively modulate post-stress state.

본 연구에서는 한국인의 정서 연구에 적합한 시각자극의 표준화를 위해서 한국정서사진체계(Korean Affects Picture System: KAPS)의 제작을 수행하면서 얻어진 결과를 간략히 보고하고자 한다. 총 210개의 시각자극 사진을 선정하여 슬라이드로 제작하고, 충남대학교 남녀 대학생 442명 (20-25세)을 대상으로 의미변별척도와 기본정서 평정척도를 사용하여 주관적 정서반응을 측정하였다. 의미변별척도 평정치의 요인분석 결과 18개의 양극성 형용사는 3개의 정서차원, 즉 즐거움, 각성도, 지배성 차원으로 구분되었다. 이는 국제정서사진체계 (IAPS)의 시각자극을 사용하여 미국인을 대상으로 수행한 연구 결과 및 한국인을 대상으로 수행한 연구 결과와 잘 일치하고 있다. KAPS에 포함되는 시각자각 수는 연구가 계속됨에 따라 지속적으로 확대되며, 실험방법 및 각각의 사진에 대한 세 차원(즐거움, 각성도, 통제력) 및 비연속 기본 정서(기쁨. 공포, 슬픔, 혐오, 놀람, 분노)에 관한 주관적 평정치를 포함하는 manual을 제작하여 정서연구자들에게 제공한다. 다른 연구자들에 의해서 얻어진 평정치 자료들도 계속해서 추가 보완될 것이다. 이를 통해서, 앞으로 우리 나라에서의 정서 연구방법의 표준화 및 인구성과의 공유화를 위한 토대를 만들 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

The purpose of the current study was comparative analysis of autonomic and electrocortical responses to passive and active touch of the tektites with different subjective emotional preference. Perspective goal of the project is development of a template for classification of tactile stimuli according to subjective comfort and associated physiological manifestations. The study was carried out on 36 female college students. Physiological signals were acquired by Grass and B1OPAC 100 systems with AcqKnowledge III software. Frontal, parietal and occipital EEG (relative power spectrum /percents/ of EEG bands - delta, theta, slow and fast alpha, low and fast beta), and autonomic variables, namely heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), pulse transit time (PTT), respiration rate (RSP) and skin conductance parameters (SCL, amplitude, rise time and number of SCRs) were analyzed for rest baseline and stimulation conditions. Analysis of the overall pattern of reaction indicated that autonomic response to tactile stimulation wasmanifested in a form of moderate HR acceleration, RSP increase, RSA decrease (lowered vagal tone), decreased PPT and increased electrodermal activity (increased SCL, several SCRs) that reflects general sympathetic activation. Parietal EEG effects (on contra-lateral side to stimulated hand) were featured by short-term alpha-blocking, slightly reduced theta and significantly increased delta and enhanced fast beta activity with few variations across stimuli. The main finding of the study was that most and least preferred textures exhibited significant differences in autonomic (HR, RSP, PTT, SCR, and at less extent in RSA and SCL) and electrocortical responses (delta, slow and fast alpha, fast beta relative power). These differences were recorded both in passive and active stimulation modes, thus demonstrating reproducibility of distinction between most and least emotionally preferred tactile stimuli, suggesting influence of psychological factors, such as emotional property of stimulus, on physiological outcome. Nevertheless, development of sufficiently sensitive and reliable template for classification of emotional responses to tactile stimulation based on physiological response pattern may require more extensive empirical database.
시각자극에 의한 긍/부정 감성상태에서 측정한 뇌파에 대한 사간-주파수 분석

사람 사이의 가장 간단한 의사 표현인 긍정/부정을 뇌파를 통해 분별하려는 작업의 첫걸음으로 시각자극에 의해 일어난 긍정/부정 감성 상태에 대해 전두부와 후두부에서 뇌파를 측정하였다. 시간-주파수 분석을 행하고, 특정 주파수 세부 대역에서 상대출력의 시간에 따른 변화를 살펴 보았다. 긍정적 감성상태에서는 느린 α파의 증가가, 부정적 감성상태에서는 빠른 α파의 증가가 관찰된다 이러한 상대출력의 시간에 따른 증감을 통해 긍정/부정 감성상태의 분별 규칙을 설정하여 측정된 뇌파에 적용해 보았다.
