For the change of market condition such as increase of demand and new selling price, an optimal retrofit method is proposed through adding new equipments to existing multiproduct batch plant. Until now, the optimum volume and the appropriate position of adding equipments are solved using mixed integer nonlinear program. In this paper, a heuristic procedure is presented which first determines the positions of adding equipments. Then a nonlinear programming is formulated to obtain their optimum sizes. The effectiveness of this method is verified by solving several literature problems.

Until now, an evolutionary method or empirical rule has been used to improve the initial design of batch/semicontinuous processes. In this paper, the proposed approach is to make a superstructure which fully contains all possible structures. And then using a MINLP(mixed integer nonlinear programming) model, we obtain the optimal process network. MINLP model contains methodology deciding the candidates of merging tasks and using parallel equipments. Thus, the economic savings of capital cost of batch/semicontinuous processes are possible by adding equipment in parallel for bottleneck stages or merging/splitting tasks. MINLP model is solved by using a generalized reduced gradient algorithm. The effectiveness of MINLP model in single product batch plant is demonstrated by solving example problems. Also, by inserting intermediate storage tank, we reduce the capital cost for batch/semicontinuous processes and determine the optimal size of intermediate storage tank.

In this paper, we present a model of an optimal retrofitting design for multisite batch plants in case there are new warehouses to supply and increase of demands at existing warehouses. In the optimal retrofitting design problem, an objective function is defined as a net profit in a chemical company-total expected selling price minus the cost of new equipments and the expected shipping cost. We determine a revised plant configuration, sizes and operating modes of newly added equipments, new shipments from plant to warehouse and batch processing variables. A mixed integer nonlinear programming(MINLP) formulation is proposed. The effectiveness of its application is illustrated with two examples. The examples are solved with GAMS/DICOPT+++.

Using a mixed integer nonlinear model, we deal with the problem of scheduling in multiproduct batch processes with due-date penalties. So far this problem was treated for an unlimited intermediate storage policy using a BAB(Branch and Bound) and a SA(Simulated Anealing) method with heuristic algorithms. In this paper, we consider both tardiness and earliness penalties and no intermediate storage as well as unlimited intermediate storage policy.
