인쇄는 필사를 대체하면서 문명을 급진전시켰다. 그렇게 발전한 인쇄체는 크게 둘로 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 글씨를 그대로 재현한 필서체와 글씨 특징을 변형 또는 강조한 인서체이다. 필서체와 인서체는 글자체의 조형 양식을 이해하는 중요한 단서지만, 이 둘 사이에는 공통점이 있어서 구분하기 쉽지 않다. 특히 글씨를 쓰지 않는 현대인은 글씨에 대한 이해도가 낮아서, 쓰기와 그리기의 차이를 이해하기 더욱 어렵다. 이 글에서 살펴본 필서체의 특징은 다음과 같다. 구조는 해서체로 상하좌우 대칭의 방형(네모틀)이다. 공간은 속공간과 밖공간의 비율이 비슷한 서예가의 해서체와 같거나, 글자 윤곽을 네모반듯하게 쓰는 사자원의 글씨와 같다. 표현은 획 머리와 맺음 등이 부드러운 곡선이다. 필서체에서 분화한 인서체는 송판본에서 나타난다. 송판본에서 널리 쓰인 인쇄체는 글씨의 미세한 곡선으로 이루어진 획을 칼로 오려낸 듯이 단조로운 방필(方筆)로 표현한 방체가 있으며, 가로세로 획을 수직 수평에 가깝게 표현한 것이 인서체화의 시작이다. 그 뒤, 명나라 시대에 인쇄체는 크게 변화한다. 명판본의 인쇄체는 방필에, 가로세로 획에서 기울기가 없고, 가로획이 가늘고 세로획은 두텁다. 획 머리와 맺음 등은 붓에 의한 자연스러운 형태에서 벗어나 맺음을 삼각형으로 표현하고 있다. 또한 글자체 공간은 반듯한 네모틀 안에 글씨를 쓸 때와는 달리 획을 인위적으로 글자틀 외곽으로 옮긴 ‘부곽방필’(膚郭方筆)의 특징을 가지고 있다. 필서체에서 인서체로 분화하는 과정을 살펴보면, ① 필서체 획을 단순화하면서 나타난 방필 ② 수직 수평의 가로세로 획 ③ 과장된 획 대비 ④ 장식화된 머리와 맺음 표현 ⑤ 부곽자 공간이 합쳐지면서 전형적인 인서체가 만들어진 것이다. 필자는 글자체의 구조 공간 표현이 모두 글씨와 같을 때에 필서체로 정의하고, 글자체의 구조 공간 표현이 모두 글씨에서의 특징을 변형 또는 강조할 때에 인서체로 정의하는 것이 옳다고 생각한다. 그리고 필서체에서 인서체로 분화, 진화하는 중에 나타난 인쇄체는 과도기적 모습으로 정의하고자 한다. Printing radicalized civilization when it replaced scribal writing, and the Inswae-che that developed from it can be divided into two main categories: Pilseo-che, which reproduce handwriting verbatim, and Inseo-che, which modify or emphasize handwriting features. While Pilseo-che and Inseo-che are important clues to understanding Gulja-che, they share some similarities that make them difficult to distinguish. Especially for those of us who don’t write, it’s hard to understand the difference between writing and drawing. In this article, we’ll look at the characteristics of Pilseo-che. The structure is a cube (square) with symmetry up, down, left, and right. The space is the same as calligraphers’ Haeseo-che, which has a similar ratio of inner and outer space, or the writing of private sources, which has a square outline. The expression is a soft curve with stroke heads and endings. Inseo-che that evolved from Pilseo-che appeared in codices. The Inswae-che that was widely used in codice was Bang-che, which expressed the fine curved strokes of the writing in a monotonous Bang-pil as if they were cut out with a knife, and the horizontal and vertical strokes were expressed close to the vertical horizontal, which was the beginning of Inseo-che. Later, during the Ming Dynasty, the Inswae-che changed significantly. The Inswae-che of the Ming book, written in Bang-pil, has no slope in the horizontal and vertical sections, and the horizontal section is thin and the vertical section is thick. The stroke heads and endings deviate from the natural shape of the brush, and the endings are expressed as triangles. In addition, the lettering space has the characteristic of a ‘Pu-kwak-bangpil’ (膚郭方筆) in which the strokes are artificially moved to the outside of the lettering frame, unlike when writing in a flat square frame. If we look at the process of evolution from Pilseo-che to Inseo-che, we can see that the Inseo-che was created by (1) Bang-pil that simplifies the cursive strokes, (2) vertical and horizontal strokes, (3) exaggerated stroke contrast, (4) decorated heads and closing expressions, and (5) the merging of minor spaces. I believe that it is correct to define calligraphy as Pilseo-che when all the structural and spatial expressions of a Gulja-che are the same as writing, and to define calligraphy as an Inseo-che when all the structural and spatial expressions of the Gulja-che modify or emphasize features of writing, and to define Inswae-che as a transitional form that appeared during the differentiation and evolution from Pilseo-che to Inseo-che.
