근거이론을 사용하는 연구가 늘어나고 있지만, 근거이론의 적절한 적용이 문제가 되고 있다. 가장 큰 이유는 근거이론에는 상이한 세 가지 흐름이 있고, 각 흐름에 따라 연구의 방법도 달라질 수 있는데, 이런 측면이 실제 연구에서는 체계적으로 검토되고 있지 못하기 때문이다. 이 글은 근거이론을 둘러싼 논의를 활성화하고 근거이론의 적절한 적용을 위해서 두 가지 작업을 하였다. 첫째, 근거이론의 방법론과 방법에 관한 논의를 세 가지 흐름, 즉 Glaser의 실증적 근거이론, Strauss의 상징적 상호주의 근거이론, 구성주의 근거이론을 이론적으로 검토하여 정리하였다. 둘째, 이론적인 논의에 따라서 근거이론방법을 구체적으로 적용한 논문을 대상으로 삼아 근거이론방법과 절차를 비판적으로 검토하였다. Despite of the growing popularity of grounded theory, its proper application has been subject to scrutiny. A major reason for the debate comes from the fact that there has not been a conscious effort to make distinctions between three different streams of grounded theory and to see the practical implications of the distinction for research. In this paper, we have two objectives: first, to analyze theoretical underpinnings of three streams, i.e., positivistic grounded theory(by Glaser), symbolic interactionism-based grounded theory(by Strauss) and constructivist grounded theory (mainly by Charmaz); second, illustrate the practical implications of our theoretical distinction by critically examining a study based on the grounded theory.
