``학춤``으로 널리 알려진 연화대는 정재로서 그 기원이나 의의에 대해 무용학계에서 연구되어왔다. 또한 그 기원은 고려사악지의 기록을 수용하여 탁발위에서 전해진 것으로 알려져 있다. 근년 들어 연화대에 관한 연구는 민속학이나 역사학에서 이루어져 왔으며 이를 토대로 정재로서 연화대에 대한 변화과정이나 문화적 의미의 해석을 하였다. 고려시대의 연화대는 학이 등장하지 않았을 가능성이 높으며 연화대에서 두 사람이 등장하며 추었을 것으로 추론된다. 연화대에 학이 등장하는 것은 조선시대부터이며 연화대의 의미는 불교적인 의미로 정토왕생과 깊은 관련이 있다. 유교를 국교로 삼은 조선시대까지 불교적 의미의 정재가 지속적으로 연행된 이유는 민중의 종교가 불교를 기반으로 하고 있었기 때문일 것이다. 그리고 조선시대 왕의 진찬례때 추었던 연화대는 왕권 또는 신권과 밀접한 연관성을 가진다. 또한 학춤은 불교의 정토신앙이 전래되어 나타난 연화화생과는 다른 전파경로를 통해 전래되어 연화대무와 합설되었을 것으로 여겨지며 이는 민속학춤과도 깊은 관련성이 있을 것으로 생각된다. 금후 이에 대한 보다 심도 있는 연구가 기대된다. Today, Yeonwhadae is also known as Hakchum, the crane dance, and some arguments have been made by scholars of dance regarding its origin and significance. According to Goryesaakji, a historical document from the Goryeo period, Yeonwhadae originated from Takbakwi. In recent years, more attention has been directed towards issues regarding Yeonwhadae in the field of folklore and historical study. Much illustration has been made, pointing out its transformation and translation of cultural symbolic meaning. There is a strong likelihood that the crane portion of this dance did not appear in Yeongwhadae during the Gorye period, but it consisted of only two men dancing instead. Eventually, it was at the beginning of the Joseon period that cranes started to appear in Yeonwhadae. Therefore, the meaning of Yeongwhadae was intimately linked with Jeongtowangsaeng of Buddhism. As we know, Confucianism was the national religion of the Joseon dynasty. However, the dance which was influenced by Buddhism was still performed during this period. The reason for this should be that the major religion of the masses was closely related to Buddhism. Moreover, Yeongwhadae was also performed only during events related to the King in the royal court, showing that the dance had relation to the royal authority or the religious power. Thus, it may be possible that Hakchum was introduced through unlikely paths of Yeonwhawhasang which were strongly influenced by Buddhism. Then Hakchum was joined with Yeonwhadaemu later, and this passage may be similar to Hakchum in folklore. In this sense, there is one further argument that might be considered regarding Yeonwhadae`s origin and significance.
