밥 피어스(Bob Pierce) 선교사의 한국전쟁에 대한 인식

본 논문은 국제 월드비전(World Vision International)의 창립자인 밥 피어스(Bob Pierce, 1914-1978) 목사의 한국전쟁에 대한 인식과 그 의미를 논한다. 한국전쟁기의 한국에서 활동한 선교사들의 선교 활동은 정치적 이데올로기, 경제 체제, 사회를 구성하는 가치 등과 내재적으로나 제도적으로 깊게 연결이 되어 있었다. 피어스 선교사의 활동과 사상은 이러한 측면을 잘 보여주고 있다. 논문은 세가지 점을 중심으로 논의한다. 첫째, 피어스의 반공주의가 어떤 의미를 갖는지 논의한다. 피어스는 공산주의 운동과 사상이 영적인 차원과 종교적 요소를 가지고 있다고 보았다. 그에게 반공주의는 기독교 신앙을 지키는 신앙인의 사명이고, 기독교 국가인 미국을 수호하는 애국의 표현이며, 종교의 자유를 지키는 자유주의의 길이고, 한국인들을 마귀의 손길에서 구원하는 복음의 사역이었다. 둘째, 한국전쟁과 함께 시작된 월드비전의 구호 사업은 인도주의적 차원과 함께 이데올로기적 차원을 가지고 있었다. 구호사업을 통하여 자유주의적 가치, 미국주도의 냉전질서, 미국의 패권주의가 전파되고 있었고 또한 정당화하고 있었다. 셋째, 미국 출신 선교사인 피어스 자신의 한국전쟁에 대한 인식은 그의 미국에 대한 자기 인식을 반영하고 있다. 그는 공산주의를 기독교에 위협이 될 뿐 아니라 자유와 개인주의라는 미국적 가치에 대한 중대한 도전으로 이해하였다. This article discusses the perception of the Korean War by Rev. Bob Pierce, founder of World Vision International. Activities of missionaries who were active in Korea during the Korean War are intrinsically and institutionally deeply linked to political ideology, economic system, and social values. Pierces missionary activities in Korea illustrate this aspect well. This article focuses on three points. First, it discusses the meaning of Pierces anti-communism. Pierce saw that the communist movement and thought had a spiritual and religious element. For him, anti-communism was a mission of believers to defend the Christian faith, an expression of patriotism to protect the United States, a Christian nation, a way of liberalism to protect religious freedom, and a ministry of the gospel to save Koreans from the hands of the devil. Second, the relief project of World Vision, which started along with the Korean War, had both a humanitarian dimension and an ideological dimension. The project was spreading and justifying liberal values, US-led Cold War order, and American hegemony. Third, Pierces own perception of the Korean War reflects his self-consciousness of the United States. He understood communism not only as a threat to Christianity, but also as a grave challenge to American values of freedom and individualism.

일제 강점기 개신교 선교사들의 경제윤리로서의 자조(自助)

이 논문은 일제 시대 개신교 선교사들이 보여준 자본주의 가치관을 검토하고, 그들이 한국인들에게 가르치고 강조한 경제윤리를 분석한다. 일제시대에 조선의 식민경제는 일제에 종속되었지만 전체적으로 자본주의 체제가 날로 확대되었다. 개신교 선교사들은 조선인들이 근대적 경제체제에 잘 적응할 수 있도록 돕고 훈련시키는 것이 선교적 차원에서 그들의 “의무”이고 “책임”이라고 생각했다. 개신교 선교사들의 경제윤리에 핵심적 가치는 자조이다. 선교사들은 자조윤리를 핵심으로 하는 경제윤리를 통하여 근대적 경제적 규범과 가치를 확산시켰고, 자본주의적 인간을 만들어내는데 아주 중요한 역할을 하다. 선교사들의 자조윤리는 일제가 1930년대에 강조한 “자력갱생”이라고 표현된 식민지 자조윤리와 깊은 연관성을 가지는데, 이 논문에서는 그 의미를 분석한다. 개신교 선교사들은 자조윤리를 통하여 한국에서 자본주의 근대성의 형성에 중요한 역할을 하다. 이것은 바로 기독교 근대성의 한 특징이다. This article examines the Protestant missionaries’ view on capitalist values during the Japanese colonial period and analyzes their economic ethics that they taught and emphasized to Koreans. In the Japanese colonial era, the capitalist system in Korea slowly but incrementally expanded though the colonial economy of Korea was extremely subordinated to the Japanese Empire. Protestant missionaries believed that it was their “duty” and “responsibility” as Christian missionaries to help and train Koreans to adapt to the modern economic system. Self-help was central to the economic ethics of Protestant missionaries. Missionaries had played an important role in spreading modern economic norms and values and in creating capitalistic human beings by nurturing economic ethics, whose core element was self-help ethics. The self-help ethics of missionaries were closely related to the colonial self-help ethics expressed as “self-reliance,” a colonial policy carried out by the colonial government in the 1930s. Protestant missionaries played an important role in the formation of capitalist modernity in Korea by spreading self-help ethics. This is a feature of Christian modernity in colonial Korea.
