A new hierarchy-preserving hierarchical compactor for regularly structured layouts has been developed. It can be used with either 1D or 2D leafeell compaction techniques and jogs can be introduced automatically. The compactor is applicable for hierarchical layouts which consist of a number of subarrays of identical cells. Firstly, a simplified model of the hierarchical layout is built in which instances of an identifical cell in a subarry is represented by a cell. Secondly, constraint graph is built for the simplified model. Appropriate constraints are added to preserve the hierarchy so that all the instances of a subarray of an identical cell have the same shape after compaction. Finally, the event-driven longest-path solving finds an optimal solution that satisfies all the constraints. This method is efficient and simple enough to accommodate 2D compaction techniques and automatic jog generation. Experimental results on bencmark examples show that the proposed method can produce the best results in area when compared with other published results.

Major developed countries in Europe, the United States and Asia have regulated all vehicles by the level of safety to meet their target on the circumstances of each country. The New Car Assessment Program has introduced to evaluate the incidence of accidents in traffic, and to encourage the development of safe vehicles to provide consumers. Since the implementation of NCAP, there is a relative lack of interest and research for rear passenger injury on the crash while manufactures have continued to focus on front seat occupant injury in the global market for years. Euro NCAP has conducted a safety evaluation of female passengers on the rear seat occupant for rigid wall crash from 2015, and recently the requirements have been further strengthened in order to reach the goal to continuously improve the safety level of vehicles. Manufactures currently have considered to improve safety performance more for the rear seat occupant regarding relevant protection criteria. On this study, there has investigated the change in the chest injury value on female rear passenger regarding the change of Dring mount position on the rigid wall crash.

This study aims to investigate the system thinking development of high school students through their construction of external representations of an ecosystem. Thirty-five eleventh grade students carried out a step-bystep task designed to facilitate their system thinking by constructing external representations. The study shows that the task helped the students to develop their system thinking. First, the students were encouraged to focus on the critical factors of an ecosystem through co-reflection of their representations. Second, this heightened focus allowed the students to consider various elements of the system at the micro-level. Third, as the students organized the relationship between various elements through their drawings, they began to comprehend relatedness among the elements. Lastly, as the students continued to re-position the structure and relationship of the system, they got to recognize the cyclic aspect of the complex system. The process of constructing external representations facilitated students’ reflection on their thinking by visualizing the relationships of the elements and minimizing their cognitive load. External representations were utilized as cognitive tools for system thinking and contributed to the ability of the students to think. However, lack of related ecological knowledge seemed to constrain students from applying their system thinking to other contexts. Some strategies to facilitate the students’ system thinking were discussed.
