우시아`(ουσια)는 철학과 기독교 신학의 역사에서 상이한 개념으로 이해되어 왔다. 철학에 있어서 우시아는 `실체`로서 개개의 독립된 사물로써 규명되는 제일 실체로 불리어졌다. 그러나 기독교의 우시아는 신을 의미하며 사유적 통일성으로서의 `존재`, `본질`로 해석되어 왔다. 이런 우시아가 신학과 철학에서 분리되어 해석됨으로 많은 혼란을 가져왔다. 그것은 초기 기독교 신학이 철학의 옷을 입는 과정에서 해석상의 오해를 낳기도 하였다. 본 논문은 우시아의 개념을 철학적 입장에서 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학과 플라톤의 개념을 살펴보고, 기독교적 입장에서 우시아를 어떻게 해석하고 수용하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 우시아의 개념이 토마스 아퀴나스에게 와서 철학적 입장과 기독교적 입장을 종합하지만, 그러나 기독교의 신약성경의 개념과는 완전하게 일치하지 않는 모습도 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 결국 신학과 철학의 근본적 차이는 이성과 계시에 있다. 철학은 신의 지식에 대한 이성적 논의의 결론으로 받아들이지만, 기독교는 결론이 아니라 전제로서 받아들여진다. The purpose of this paper is to show why and in what philosophical concept of ousia makes a difference from Christian concept of ousia. Aristoteles made a review on the various questions concerning the concept of ousia in the chapters 7 and 8 of his Metaphysics. These are "What is being?", "What is the universal?", "What is the genus?", and "What is the substrate?" Aristoteles prescribed that ousia is a concrete and individual thing, but that it is an "eternal and unchangeable" thing, separated from the substrate. This idea opened `the way toward his discussion on the primary philosophy, namely theology. `I examined how the concept of ousia had been misunderstood, mistranslated and misused in some Christian philosophers from the early stage of Christianity to the Middle Ages. This misunderstanding of the concept of ousia resulted from failing to set a limitation in an explanation of infinite God. To show their misunderstanding of the concept of God, I explain the Christian concept of God as Being, namely esse.
