An attachment part of an excavator consists of boom, arm and bucket. Because these weight make a massive impact on the upper and lower structure, these parts of the structure should be optimized properly for the light weight design of an excavator. In this paper, for this reason, the optimization of an excavator boom was performed; the weight as objective function, the thickness of the boom plate as design variables and the stress of the structure as constraints. About five kinds of operation mode of an excavator existing models and advanced high strength steel plate models have compared the results of the optimization. Optimization results, the mass of existing models 12.5% and advanced high strength steel plate models 14% was reduced.
