The assurance of adequate occupant protection in side impact accidents is an issue of worldwide significance. According to a new regulation for vehicle side structures. the requirements of the FMVSS 214 and expected NCAP type dynamic side impact tests are faced<br/> on a new challanges to automotive design and safety engineers. In the study. a nobel methodology is developed to estimate effects of vehicle structure in terms of occupant injuries based on the simultaneous quasi -static testing and simulation technique.<br/> In this work. the developed method is attempted to combined the advantages of sub-system and full scale impact testings. The strategy of the method is simulating an actual impact event by a slow motion of real - time simulation technique. The exterior deformable moving ram and interior body rams of test rig are moved simultaneously to new correlated positions by computer contols. Results from the CC-CTP testing show a good agreement wi th the full scale crash test.<br/>

The sled impact test and simulation of door trim for side impact protection were conducted in order to classify the role of door trim during the full vehicle side impact. This paper describes the correlation of armrest stiffness for door trim in abdomen forces by simple sled test method to simulate Korean side impact regulation. In this sled test, the door inner panel which was deformed in the full scale test was rigidly set on the sled, and impacted the dummy. Even if the sled moved in normal rail used in HyGe sled facility, the dummy responses were correlated with full vehicle tests in order to study occupant protection practically. In the study of sled tests, the effects of door trim especially armrest stiffness were studied in terms of abdomen forces measured from EUROSID abdomen 3 force sensors. In conclusion, it was found that the sled test with deformed door was a useful and efficient method to study for occupant protection.

The availability of in-depth accident data is a prerequisite for each efficient traffic safety management system. Identification and definition of the relevant problem together with knowledge of the data and parameters describing this problem is essential for its successful solution. Comprehensive, up-to-date, accident data is needed for recognition of the scope of road safety problems and for raising public awareness. Reliable and relevant data enable the identification of the contributory factors of the individual accidents, and an unveiling of the background of the risk behaviour of the road users. It offers the best way to explore the prevention of accidents, and ways to implement measures to reduce accident severity. In this study, reviewing the existing iGlad and GIDAS system, KIDAS data format can be finalized through feasibility evaluation. The progressive approach is proposed to successful settlement of Korea in-depth accident study. As the initial stage of in-depth investigation DB construction, the KIDAS is not repetition of the current police based TAAS. It is essential part of improving vehicle safety and reduction of traffic fatality in Korea. 72 Contributing factors like road and traffic characteristics, vehicle parameters, and information about the people involved in the accident have to be investigated and registered as well in the KIDAS.

In Korea, side impact type accidents are one of the main cause of fatality. MLTM and KATRI established sie impact regulation as well as NCAP type assessments to protect occupants. Recently, WP29 formed a informal group to study a possible harmonization of pole side impact test methods with WorldSID as a GTR. In this paper, two different dummies, ES-2 and WorldSID were evaluated with three different types of pole side impact test methods.

The periodic technical vehicle inspection is to prevent the accident through the finding and fixing the defects of the vehicle. The periodic technical vehicle inspection in Korea was studied for assessing the adequacy of the inspection frequency. The inspection frequencies of many countries including EU, USA and Japan were compared. The average mileages by the vehicle usage and type were represented. The warranty period and recommended replacement period of parts of the domestic auto makers was studied. Currently, the inspection frequency for the periodic technical vehicle inspection in Korea is appropriate. The pass-fail rate and the cost-benefit analysis for the periodic technical inspection in Korea will be needed in the decision making process for the inspection frequency.

The restraint systems on the front seats of automobiles have been continuously improved in recent years. Thus, the front seats consist of a safety belt with a pretensioner and load limiter to decrease rear passenger"s injuries on frontal crash. In rear seats, however, there is a lack of restraint systems as a pretensioner and load limiter as well as rear seat occupant"s injury is higher than the front seat occupant"s according to the study result for safety. In this study, the load-limiter and pretensioner were modeled to to improve injury severity for rear seat female occupant using the simulation techniques. The design parameters were chosen a pretensioner and load limiter : Load limiter force, pretensioner TTF(Time to Fire), pretensioner inlet. Then, the design variables were optimized using the design of experiment method and Injury assessment method used joint probability of injury in USNCAP. This study investigated the correlation between joint probability of injury and the design variables and minimized injury criteria through various method and the design of restraint systems.
