The basic concept of Performance-Based Seismic Design(PBSD) is to design buildings to satisfy the target performance level for earthquake load that may occur during the term of use of those buildings. In such a concept of seismic design, therefore, there has been active research into Displacement-Based Design(DBD) so that the response is controlled within the recently given target displacement. This paper aims to review the basic concept of DBD, to apply it to the seismic design of structural R/C shear walls for comparing with design results by the existing seismic design process which is Force-Based Design(FBD) method, and to study the usefulness of DBD in evaluating the seismic capacity of shear wall. Five and ten story shear wall buildings with various aspect ratio are designed by both DBD and FBD, and the results are compared each other. Also seismic evaluation for shear wall structure is performed by using DBD and Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM). The result shows that required base shear calculated by DBD is less than that by FBD. It means that more economic design is possible when DBD is used for seismic design of shear wall structure. In the evaluation of seismic capacity for existing shear wall structure, DBD method requires lower seismic capacity than CSM.
