Tensile properties of GFRP composites were evaluated and the damage generated during tensile loading were detected using the PVDF sensor. GFRP composites with three different ply directions were prepared: 4 ply with single axis and 0°, 4ply with 3 axises and ±45° and 4ply with three axies and 0 and ±45°. Four strain gages and 1 PVDF sensor for measuring axial and transverse strains were installed on the tensile specimen. During tensile loading, the strain gages were survived to 16000 ue, while the PVDF sensor could detect the tensile deformation up to failure of the tensile specimen. Within the sensing range of the straingage, two tensile strain measured from the strain gage and PVDF sensor were significantly correlated. During plastic deformation of the specimen, some damges in the specimen could be generated, which could be detected with the PVDF sensor. Therefore it was found that the PVDF sensor could be used in measuring the tensile strain and detecting the damage occurred in the specimen.
