개구리밥(Spirodela polyrhiza)에 의한 수중 영양염류 및 중금속 제거효율 평가

Increasing industrialization and huge population are leading to the deterioration of the water�ᅠ�ᅠ quality. Contaminated water has conventionally been treated by physical, chemical and biological methods. Phytoremediation is a technology that involves the use of plants to remove pollutants from the environment. Besides being an economical, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly method, it can be useful in treating a variety of contaminants (nutrients, heavy metals, organic matter, and radionuclides). This study was carried out to evaluate the removal capacity of the heavy metals (Cd and Cu) as well as the nutrients (N and P) from the synthetic wastewater using Spirodela polyrhiza, giant duckweed. Additionally, it was performed to compare their removal efficiencies by the Spirodela polyrhiza, according to the kinds and types of pollutants in the synthetic wastewater. As N, P, Cd and Cu were singly added to the synthetic wastewater with the Spirodela polyrhiza, their respective concentrations were decreased over time. Their removal efficiencies were in the order as follows: P (90%)> Cu (73%)> N (55%)> Cd (43%). In the treatment of binary mixture of N and P, the removal efficiencies of N and P were 71% and 92%, respectively. In the treatment of binary mixture of Cd and Cu, those of Cd and Cu were 49% and 76%, respectively. In the treatment of quaternary mixture of N, P, Cd, and Cu, the removal efficiencies of N, P, Cd, and Cu were 46%, 62%, 24%, and 42%, respectively. In terms of the number of pollutants used in the study, the removal efficiencies of pollutants were more efficient in the binary mixture treatments than in the quaternary mixture treatments. Based on the results obtained from this study, it appears that the Spirodela polyrhiza can be potentially used as one of the efficient and eco-friendly water treatment technologies for the removal of the N, P and the heavy metals from the wastewater. The further research is extensively needed to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the removal of the pollutants by the Spirodela polyrhiza from the wastewater.
