미국 연극의 대표적 극작가 아서 밀러는 2차 세계대전 이후 미국 사회의 어둡고 부정적인 면을 관찰하면서 사회와 개인의 유기적 관계 속에서 사회와 개인의 갈등과 책임 문제를 주제로 삼았다. 여기서 한 개인이 겪는 좌절은 한 개인 또는 그가 속한 가정만의 책임이 아니라 사회 전체의 문제라고 본다. 밀러는 이러한 현대인의 비극적 상황을 작품의 소재로 선정하고 자신의 작품을 통해 현대의 비극 가능성을 정립했다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 고대 그리스 시대의 아리스토텔레스의 비극론에서 벗어나 시대와 사회의 변화에 걸맞게 변화시키고자 한 밀러의 현대 비극 개념에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 아리스토텔레스의 『시학』에서 나타나는 비극 개념에서 밀러가 수정하고자 한 부분은 극의 주인공이 갖추어야 할 조건, 주인공의 파멸 요인, 비극의 목적 및 효과로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 그리고 밀러의 비극 개념이 현대적으로 잘 드러낸 작품인 『세일즈맨의 죽음』을 통해서 주인공 윌 리가 비극적 결말을 맞이하게 된 원인을 사회와의 갈등, 가족과의 갈등, 그리고 개인적인 결함으로 구분하여 찾아보려 한다. 여기서 윌리가 단순한 패배자가 아니라 최악의 현실 속에서 끝까지 자기의 꿈에 대한 희망과 미련을 버리지 않고 목숨까지 버리는 과정을 살펴보면서 이 작품을 읽는 독자가 현대 사회의 모순과 문제점에 대해 깨닫고자한다. "Death of a salesman" by Arthur Miller, a representative American playwriter after World War II, brings up the modern social problem of mammonism through Willy, who falls behind in this changing society and ends his life by committing suicide. This thesis is based on Arthur Miller`s new understanding of traditional tragedy. He revised Aristotle`s tragedy according to modern society. Although Aristotle`s tragedy has had great influence on the development of play so far, Miller suggested a new concept of tragedy did not stick to the old tragedy, but fit into a rapidly-changing society. Miller insisted that Aristotle"s tragedy should be revised into the following the three parts. The first is an essential element of tragedy, the protagonist can be not just a noble person, but also an ordinary person. The second is the cause of the protagonist"s downfall, and Miller said this is the protagonist`s harmatia - his error of judgement and the social system that forces him to challenge against his own dignity and his will to resist being forced to that challenge. The last is the goal and effect of a tragedy, and he suggested that a play should not just cause audience`s catharsis, but also let them recognize the problems of modern society. Based on the modern tragedy of Miller, I am willing to find the reason why Willy falls behind and even family can`t comfort him, leading him to suicide in "Death of a salesman" based on modern tragedy of Miller. The reason for Willy`s tragedy can be analyzed to lie in conflict with society, conflict with family, and his own personal defects. First, his conflict with the changing society due to his anachronistic sense of values influenced by his father, his brother Ben, and Dave Singleman is one of the reasons. Second, his improper views on education and the conflict with family members is another reason. He has uncomfortable relationship with his sons, who were unable to grow up to become normal adults due to the trauma from Willy`s adultery, and his wife doesn`t fully understand her husband. Last, his personal defects including his greed of material with unprincipled values - which is not proper in modern society, overweening pride, and bluffing are the final reason.
