For young children who are in the process of developing their self-identity, it is important to read children's literature. For children who are learning letters, reading illustrated story books plays a decisive role in their fundamental growth such as the acquisition of language, mental and physical development and the attainment of gender identity. Among such various functions of meaning, the present study is focused on the gender characteristic found in young children's reading of illustrated story books. It is because illustrated story books are a primary and decisive genre in preschoolers' establishment of gender identity. This paper purposed to clarify how gender images and plots are formed in children's literature. For this purpose, the author selected illustrated story books that are important for children at the age of being exposed to the influence of children's literature for the first time in their life, and examine them focused on gender differences observed in the illustrated story books. In particular, this study paid attention to women's stories in children's literature to look for the characteristics of women's plot and its future direction.
