Vol.50 No.2

The sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus, is becoming an important aquaculture species in China, Japan and Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biological performance of a tubular type of subsurface cage for sea cucumber grow-out by in-situ tests. The cage structure was constructed of PP (polypropylene) frames and PP tubes (Φ130 mm×24 pieces). A set of tests were conducted at a depth of 15 m near Seosaeng, Ulsan, Korea for 295 days (23 July, 2012 to 13 May, 2013). A total of 155 sea cucumbers were used and fed a mixed diet containing mud, mineral, wheat, fish meal, etc (3% of their body weight). At the end of the experiments, sea cucumber showed a higher survival rate in feed shelter (77.14%) rather than no feed shelter (64.71%). The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumbers in feed condition (0.04% day-1) was higher than that of no feed culture animals (-0.49% day-1) during total experimental periods. The result was able to find a no significance difference in survival rate but a significance difference in SGR under feed and no feed treatments.

A series of experiments on the movement patterns of sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) to the change of water temperature (10, 13, 16, 19 and 21℃) were carried out in the indoor water tank. The experiments consisted of the preliminary test (Case 1) and formal experiments (Case 2). In case 1 test, the moving patterns of sea cucumbers inside model cage set up in water tank was examined with naked eye observation. In addition, the moving speed and distance of total sea cucumbers in water tank were analyzed based on the image of video camera and PVS program in the case 2 test. The initial body wet weights of sea cucumber were 33.1±11.3 g in case 1 and 52.9±15.3 g in case 2 , respectively. The movement patterns of sea cucumbers were observed using video camera for 12 hours a day. The movement pattern of sea cucumber showed the highest activity at 10℃ of water temperature. The maximum moving distance and speed of sea cucumber were about 0.78m and approximately 0.028 cm/s at 10℃, respectively. The minimum moving distance and speed of sea cucumber were about 0.01m at 19℃ and approximately 0.0048cm/s at 21℃, respectively. It was observed that the optimum water temperature for the movement of sea cucumber was about 10℃.

The purpose of this study is to examine the feed selectivity of octopus (octopus vulgaris) and the survival and growth rates of octopus in two cage models (tube and den type) set up in the indoor water tank. The two trial tests (feed selectivity and ongrowing) were conducted for 14 days (13 September to 26 September, 2012) and 25 days (15 May to 8 June, 2012), respectively. The size of fishing pot used in the feed selectivity was 300D×615L ㎜. The frame of two cage models were made of poly propylene pipe and the sizes of cage models were 1070L×500B×330D ㎜, composed of plastic pots (Φ120 ㎜×8 pieces) in tube type cage and 980L×460B×570D ㎜, constructured of PVC pipes (Φ70 ㎜) for den was. In the experiments, the water temperatures ranged from 15 to 16℃ and salinity was 33 psu. A total of 2 specimens (body weight: 700-1100 g) in the case Ⅰ and 20 specimens (body weight: 594±127.60 g) in the case Ⅱ were used. The feed used in the tests were crab, mussel, mackerel and manila clam and food ratio was 3-8% of body weight. The results of the experiment (e.g. biological parameters) were analyzed with the statistical computer package SPSS ver. 20. According to the results of case Ⅰ experiments, crab (51%) and mackerel (38%) were high in feed selectivity of octopus. The survival rate (80%) of octopus in den type model were higher than that (33.3%) of tube type model. The reason of high mortality in tube type model is estimated to stress suffered form a small space. Further study was needed to draw more accurate results considering the improvement of cage model structure and test conditions like noise, intensity of illumination, etc.

A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate biological performances of three types of rearing systems for sea cucumber grow-out in indoor seawater tank of chonnam national university for 61 days (5. 29 - 7. 30. 2013). The cage models were made of polypropylene pipe for the frames. The size of the cage models were 920L×570B×500D ㎜, composed PE eel pots (hiding place: Ф130 ㎜×21 pieces, total volume: 0.51 m³) in TC, and 110L×800B×500D ㎜, constructed of PVC pipes (hiding place: Ф130 ㎜×21 pieces, total volume: 0.27 m³)in DC and UC(440L×460×620 ㎜ volume: 0.13 m³). In Experiment TC, DC and TC models were set up in the flow - through tank (7000L×6000B×820D ㎜, water depth: 0.82 m) at Chonnal National University, Yeosu, Korea for period of 99 days (17 July to 22 April 2013). In Experiment, a total 200 sea cucumbers were used, with an initial body wet weight of 64.68 ± 33.94 g. The water temperatures ranged from 10.88 to 16.65℃, and salinity ranged from 34.68 to 32.26 psu. Sea cucumbers were fed a mixed diet(mud, mineral, fish meal, etc.) and the feed was supplied to 3% of the weight. The results of an experiment (e.g. biological parameters) were analyzed with the statistical computer package SPSS ver. 21 from IBM. In Experiment, the survival rates of sea cucumber in UC (100%) and DC (87.62%) were higher than those of the TC (48.57%). The specific growth rate (SGR) of sea cucumber cages in DC (0.19%day-1) SGR was slightly higher than those UC (-0.25%day-1) results. The next step is to conduct indoor water tank test in order to investigate whether or not the rearing systems could be incorporated effectively for sea cucumber aquaculture industry. considering the season and the stocking densities of sea cucumber reared in the systems.
