The current study was undertaken to determine whether neonatal testosterone treatment affected serum growth hormone concentration and growth performance (body weight gain and backfat thickness) in growing pigs. A total of 32 male Piglets from 8 sows (4 per sow) were allocated to one of 4 treatments (four piglets from one litter were allocated to 4 treatments evenly). Piglets in treatment(Trt) 1 (NC) were castrated within 24 hr after birth. piglets in Trt 2 (NC+T) were injected with 10 ㎎ of testosterone propionate after being castrated within 24 hr after birth. Piglets in lit 3 (PC) were castrated at 3 week of age. Piglets in Trt 4 (INT) were never castrated. Body weight was measured at 3 week, 6 week, 3 month, 4 month and 5 month of age, and backfat thickness at , month. 4 month and 5 month of age. Serum testosterone and growth hormone concentrations were measured at 5 month of age. There was no significant difference in overall body weight gain during 5 months of period among treatments. However. during 3-4 month of age, body weight gain of NC+T. PC and INT Trts was significantly increased (P$lt;0.01). compared to that of NC Trt, indicating that testosterone treatment stimulated body weight gain. Only INT Trt showed higher body weight gain and thinner backfat than other Trts during 4-5 month of age. Serum testosterone was higher (P$lt;0.01) in INT Trt, compared to other Trts. There was no significant difference in serum: growth hormone concentration among treatments.
