Mixture formation is affected by spray characteristics of injector and wall film flow. In this paper, spray characteristics such as size distribution, SMD, spray angle and velocity of three type injectors which have different spray patterns are measured by PMAS. Wall film flow rate of intake port are measured. From these experiments, the fuel behavior of three type injectors such as injection direction, spray angle and wall film flow is made clear. Consequently, the optimal fuel injection system and conditions for reducing spray size and minimizing the wall fuel film are found through this research.<br/>

Some considerations of Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) technology were studied for getting good results from measurements of in-cylinder flow fields. And bulk air flow induced into the cylinder through two intake ports was measured on horizontal and vertical sections of the transparent cylinder in steady flow rig. Also, two-dimensional velocity distributions were compared with computed results from Computational Fluid Dynamics code. The change of bulk air flow with the geometry of piston top face was observed in a transparent engine.<br/>

For development of SDI(Spark-ignited Direct Injection) engine, stratified mixture formation with adequate strength at spark plug was required in wide range of engine operating conditions. So, spray structure under high ambient pressure and spray distribution after impingement on piston bowl in motoring engine was visualized by using laser equipment. Also, in-cylinder bulk flow structure was measured by using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system. Counter-rotating tumble port and bowl piston was found effective to conserve bulk motion directed to spark plug in compression. In addition, mask assached near valve seat in intake port was proposed to attenuate conventional tumble component and enhance counter-rotating tumble component.<br/>
