KAERI has contrived 15 kinds of spacer grid shapes of its own since 1997 and applied for domestic and<br/> foreign patents. The elastic-plastic deformation characteristic of the spacer grid spring in a nuclear fuel assembly is important to evaluate the supporting capability of a fuel rod. The characteristic is usually obtained from the test and is used to the design of spring. In this paper, the finite element analyses simulating the characteristic test of three spacer grid springs which has been uniquely designed by KAERI are performed and their characteristic curves are obtained. Comparisons with test results are made and the appropriate boundary condition in the characteristic analysis of a spacer grid spring is proposed. The stiffness and linear range of a spacer grid spring are well predicted by the present finite element analysis, and some improvement is needed for the nonlinear range.

A spacer grid is one of the structural core components of nuclear fuel assemblies for pressurized light water reactors. Since 1997, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has devised 16 kinds of spacer grid shapes and up to now acquired US, Japan, China, and Republic of Korea (ROK) patents for 15 kinds of spacer grid shapes from them. The mechanical and structural performance tests for two of the KAERI devised spacer grid shapes that are assumed to be the most effective candidates for the spacer grid of the next generation nuclear fuel assembly in ROK, were performed. Also tests for two commercial spacer grids were performed for the sake of a comparison. In this paper, the results are carefully compared and discussed. The comparisons included the spring characteristics, fuel rod vibration characteristics, fretting wear resistance, and the impact characteristics of the spacer grids. The comparison results have shown that the performances of the KAERI devised spacer grids are better or at least not worse than those of the commercial spacer grids.

The spacer grid is one of the structural components of the nuclear fuel assemblies for the pressurized light water reactors. Based on the fuel assembly mechanical design experience and the review results on the foreign advanced nuclear fuel and US patents on the spacer grid, 14 kinds of spacer grid candidates are derived by KAERI. Through the mechanical/structural screening tests for comparing the mechanical/structural performance of the derived candidates, 2 leading candidates of the spacer grids have been selected. In this paper detailed test and analysis results on the leading candidates are discussed.

The spacer grid is one of the structural components of the nuclear fuel assemblies for the pressurized light water reactors. The spacer grid supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and maintains a coolable geometry under an external impact load, such as earthquakes. Through the analysis and test on the spacer grid springs that are conceptually derived from the engineering point of view by KAERI, shapes of the springs are modified to improve their support performance of the fuel rod in the nuclear reactor core.
