Recently, Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is widely used in designing various kinds of engineered products. Compared with trial and error approach by a number of experiments, product design by active usage of CAE has an advantage of inexpensive cost and design flexibility. Thus, prediction accuracy of CAE model becomes an important issue. Validation & Verification (V&V) comprised of model calibration, validation, and update is the study field of enhancing prediction accuracy of the CAE model. This study implemented these V&V techniques on automobile steering column model. Steering column is the device for connecting the steering wheel to the steering mechanism. For comfortable driving, the vibration-related elements should be strictly designed to escape vibrational resonance. Especially, for considering various sources of uncertainty on material properties, geometry properties, and measurement errors, statistical approach is implemented.

Since today’s engineering design is too complex and sophisticated, modelers have difficulty modelling a simulation models with good prediction. Complex engineered system has a large amount of uncertainties that even modelers can’t figure out. In this paper, model calibration method with bias is introduced to deal with the unrecognized uncertainties. To confirm the efficiency of this method, cantilever beam model is calibrated as a case study. As a result, the validity of cantilever beam model is proven.

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is widely used for designing and assessing various types of engineering products. In automotive industry, where the product cycle has become shorter than ever before, implementation of CAE model is actively engaged. The biggest issue on active usage of CAE is to build a high-fidelity computational model. One research field, called Validation and Verification (V&V), has been involved in enhancing the credibility of CAE model through numerous studies. Most of V&V studies focus on statistical model validation which considers various sources of uncertainty. For a large scale model, for example vehicle system model, hierarchical approach aids improving the credibility of CAE model from the bottom level to the top level of an engineering system. In this study, case studies of statistical model validation on steering column and suspension are introduced.
