<잊혀진 꿈의 동굴>은 1994년에 발견된 쇼베 동굴벽화에 관한 다큐멘터리 영화이다. 베르너 헤어조크는 현생인류 최초의 회화가 보여주는 예술적 탁월함으로 인하여 황홀경에 사로잡힌다. 벽화는 대부분 동물 그림으로써 벽면의 굴곡을 활용하여 움직이는 듯한 생동감을 얻고 있다. 또한 그 그림들 속에서는 이야기 구조도보이고 애니메이션 기법도 있으며 신화도 발견된다. 심지어 원근법도 사용하고 있어서 구석기시대에 살았던 인류가 도대체 어떤 존재였는지 상상력을 확장시킨다. 쇼베 동굴벽화가 헤어조크를 매혹시킨 이유는 다름아닌 그것의 ‘정교함’ 때문이다. 그는 지금으로부터 약 3만 2천 년 전에 그려진 동굴벽화가 어떻게 미학적으로도 그토록 훌륭한지에 대한 의문에 휩싸여 <잊혀진 꿈의 동굴>을 연출하기에 이르렀다. 또한 쇼베 동굴벽화는 오늘날 상식처럼 통용되고 있는 진화론적 관점에 대해서도 일대 지각변동을 일으킨다. 동굴벽화의 기법들이 현대미술의 표현 기법과 비교하여 큰 차이가 없기 때문이다. 이는 현생인류의 정체성을 반추한다. <Cave of Forgotten Dreams> is a documentary about the Chauvet Cave, which was found in 1994. The director of this film, Werner Herzog was fascinated by an artistic excellence of the first wall paintings in mankind. Most of the paintings show animals which have liveliness using a curved surface of the wall. There is also a story, some animation techniques, and a myth in those wall paintings. The ancient men who painted these pieces of art even shows a fine command of perspective, and the most surprising thing is that these wall paintings are supposedly drawn in the old stone age. He decided to make this film to question about how can it be so superb aesthetically even though it was painted about more than 32,000 years ago. The wall paintings also brings a paradigm shift in a perspective of Darwinism, which circulates as a common sense these days. It is because there are almost no difference between skills which was used for the wall paintings to skills which are used in modern paintings. It ruminates an identity of the modern mankind.
