The main purpose of the study is to understand the phenomenon of sharing in SNSs. Specifically, the study conceptualizes users’ sharing behaviors by focusing on ‘social support’ and explores factors influencing these behaviors. The study proposes four research questions: (1) How actively do people participate in sharing behaviors? (2) How does level of income and education affect sharing behaviors? (3) How do level of individualism and collectivism affect sharing behaviors? (4) How does collective efficacy affect sharing? The survey was conducted among 1500 residents in Seoul to empirically investigate these research questions. The results present three major findings. First, SNSs users seem to share diverse resources. Specifically, users show more taking behaviors of information and knowledge rather than giving behaviors. By contrast, they engage in giving behaviors more than taking behaviors regarding other resources such as affection, appraisal, and instruments. Second, the results suggest that collective efficacy has a positive effect on sharing behaviors. While informal social control is a better predictor of taking than giving, social cohesion has a more impact on giving than taking. Third, the findings show collectivism has a negative effect on sharing behaviors.
