Recent Diesel Engine usually uses main bearing cap to reduce mass, to improve assembly line efficiency and to secure sufficient stiffness for crank shaft support. If main bearing cap doesn’t have sufficient stiffness and durability performance, there is a potential to cause many problems such as oil leakage and block crack. In this paper, an effective way is introduced to achieve mass reduction, to reduce bearing distortion and to improve durability of main bearing cap using the design of experiments and computer simulation. Based on the results from this study, the best effective factor is material property for bearing performance. And the mass of the best condition is reduced by 20.7% when compared with the mass of base model.
