고대로부터 한국과 인도는 서로 간에 형성된 정신적 교감을 이어오면서 문화적 측면에서 많은 교류가 있었다. 김수로 왕의 부인 허 왕비에 관한 이야기는 불교를 통한 한국과 인도문화의 교류 사실을 말해주는 역사적 흔적이다. 그 이후 많은 승려들이 불법(佛法)을 구하기 위해 인도 땅을 밟았고, 활발한 문화적 교류가 전개되었다. 이러한 문화적 역량이 한국문화의 토대에 바탕이 되기도 하였다. 일제 식민지 지배 기간에는 타고르, 간디 그리고 네루 등 인도의 반식민주의 운동가들의 사상과 행동에 한국의 민족주의자들이 많은 영향을 받았다. 그리고 1990년경부터 양국 간의 경제 협력 관계가 구축되면서 지금까지 그 관계를 계속 유지 발전시켜 나가고 있다. 국제화 시대에 정치·경제적 긴밀한 협력이 요구되는 현 상황에서 서로의 이해와 깊은 신뢰 구축의 일환으로 문화연계의 필요성이 더욱 강조되고 있다. 이를 위해 심층적이고 다각적인 이문화(異文化) 관리가 요구된다. This paper aims to study the necessity of cultural linkages for the diversifying relations to Korea and India. India and Korea had significant space in the mental cognizance of each other in past. However, more than material exchange, the mutual relations were based more on the ideational and cultural commonalities. The direct or indirect way of Buddhism, from India to Korea, along with legend of the princess Ho of Kaya kingdom was the initial route of interactions between the two cultures. The bilateral relationship of South Korea and India again got momentum with the beginning of economic cooperation between the two countries from the early 1990s. Both the countries have been able to partially tap the benefits of bilateral cooperation. However, there remains a vast potential of mutual economic cooperation between India and Korea in future. There have been efforts by the governments of both the countries to take the economic cooperation between both countries and a new level. In the new emerging balance relationship between India and Korea, again the issue of cultural and historical linkages would be brought back to deepen the trust and understanding of each other. Though it is hard to determine the extent of influence of cultural and historical factors on the contemporary economic and political relationship of two countries, there is no denial of the fact that they would augment the growing relationship between the two countries and make it more sustainable.
