Utilization of HPSG(Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar) now seems essential for more efficient analysis of sentence structure, paragraph understanding, and ultimately for improvement of ability in fast reading. So far, the method of five sentence types presented by Onions has been employed. The method having left much to be desired, however, now is a better time to try to find a more advanced method. A lot has been done in Structural and Transformational Generative Grammar in relation to the analytical method of sentence structure, but they have been a little far from being applied in actual reading practice. In this regard, HPSG seems more advanced than Traditional Grammar in that it takes phrases not words for analytical unit. When analyzing sentences utilizing HPSG, you can escape from word-by-word analysis into phrasal unit, in other words, a wider thinking unit. You will be able to easily catch the key structure of sentences no matter how long they may be, by eliminating prepositional and adverbial phrases. By doing so, better English reading will be also possible. HPSG, in these respects, seems to get more significant in grammatical study, thus, to ask for more effort from us to develop further.
