Vol.44 No.2

This study examines the devastating effects of American exceptionalism of the European settlers in American colonies on a community of displaced people in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy. In A Mercy, Morrison, in relation to American exceptionalism, explores the history of a heterogenous, multi-ethnic community in the seventeenth century, the period before the time of the American nation. It was the chaotic era of American origins when slavery was not yet institutionalized and thus racism was not connected to slavery. Under the exceptionalist myth of the chosen and the others, good and evil, the community of others, once dependent on each other with familial ties, ended up in split and disruption while racism joined slavery as a result of the ideology of separation.

ESP/EAP: Genre-based teaching in reading and writing

Vol.36 No.2

This is a library research to investigate the efficacy of genre-based teaching in reading and writing. From the research, it is concluded that genre-based teaching can be an effective way to teach L2 students who need academic success across various disciplines in the US. Genre-based teaching makes clear what is to be learned to facilitate the acquisition of reading and writing skills. It also provides a coherent framework for focusing on both language and contexts. Ways of implementing the genre-based teaching method are discussed in the ‘impact on the L2 classroom’. The limitations and implications of genre-based teaching are addressed in the ‘Discussion’.

Vol.30 No.3

This paper examines textual ambivalence in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. In the novel, Morrison emphasizes and celebrates the restoring of African- American root of their ancestors and culture through which African-Americans can achieve their racial pride. Simultaneously, she investigates with the critical view the meaning of black manhood, contradictory political ideologies of assimilation and black nationalism, the troubling issue of class and color hierarchies and the shameful history of slavery. Readers, however, may easily pass them over because of the unique narrative pattern, heroic mono-myth related to Western and African myth, folklore and black oral tradition that Morrison deliberately sets up in the text. Thus, this paper centers on conflicting messages around the quest for black identity of the privileged, middle class Milkman Dead in the journey to the rural South.

Vol.32 No.4

This paper explores heterosexual love of African Americans under racist assumptions pervading American society. In the novel, Hurston probes how the love relationships are affected and destroyed by the assumptions along with the gradual growth of self-recognition of the heroine, Janie. Throughout the journey to find the great love of her life, Janie confronts diverse social forces derived from racism, that is, sexism, masculinist domination, and intra-racial prejudice in the social hierarchy, which ruin the intersubjective romantic relationships between African Americans. Both Janie and Tea Cake, who is presented as her ideal love in the text, are shown to be susceptible to these destructive conflicts and infected with them. Hurston, through Janie's narrative, celebrates the possibility of equitable and liberated love but indicts institutional racism in America for distorting satisfying heterosexual relationships simultaneously.

Vol.46 No.2

This paper analyzes the quest for identity of a young African-American woman whose subjectivity is affected and determined by colorism internalized within the African-American community in Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child. In the novel, Bride, a professional woman with deep black skin, seems to reestablish her self successfully separate from the traumatic past. In the process of the narrative, her body is foregrounded as an authorized site of building the new identity. As the narrative develops, however, she comes to confront her identity crisis, which also emerges through the body being transformed. The signs of her body conversion into a little girl are linked to the past trauma and secret that the narrative revolves around and reveals gradually. Therefore, this study centers on Bride’s body transformation in relation to her trauma and the narrative structure of revelation.

Vol.31 No.3

This study examines the traumatic experience of maternal loss under the slavery in early colonial America in Toni Morrison's A Mercy. In the novel, Morrison probes how the slavery affects a slave girl's internal life and ends in her psychic damage. Florens, the slave girl, who was separated from her slave mother at the age of 8, is dislocated by the mother's enigmatic words and thus is haunted forever by the image of her mother telling something. As a result, Florens shows inability to read others' words and gestures to see what they think of and how they feel, which is vital to communicate with others. The effect of the premature separation from her mother is also reflected in her prose style as a narrator. Likewise, the forced isolation of mother and daughter under the slavery is, deliberately, embodied in the narrative structure.

Korean Students’Opinions on and Strategies for American English Writing in the US

Vol.21 No.1

This research examines Korean graduate students’ writing experiences in an academic setting in the US in relations to contrastive rhetoric and critical pedagogy by focusing on the following questions: (1) What was your first experience writing in English?; (2) How, if ever, did you learn about the American English writing style for essays or research articles?; (3) Have you ever tried to accommodate your writing to fit the American writing style?; (4) What strategies have you used to accommodate the American English writing style?; (5) Do you think it is necessary to adopt the American writing style? Or do you feel forced to adopt?; and (6) If you see the necessity, what are the reasons? If not, what are the reasons? The analysis of the questionnaire data shows that nearly all participants felt it is necessary to adopt, instead of challenge, the American English writing style while studying in America. Therefore, they have had tried to accommodate the American English writing style although they still see the difficulty of adapting their writing to the conventional English writing. The discussion centers on underlying power struggles between L2 students and discipline faculty and on reasons why the Korean graduate students choose to accommodate their own writing to American English writing.

2013 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.13 No.3

Purpose: Autonomous hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules produce thyroid hormone independently of TSH. Of these, toxic thyroid nodules provoke hyperthyroidism and can be treated by surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. The aim of this study was evaluating the role of each treatment method in Korean patients with toxic thyroid nodule. Methods: From July 2008 to June 2013, 10 patients were diagnosed with toxic thyroid nodule. We diagnosed toxic thyroid nodule by thyroid function test and thyroid scan. Thyroid function test showed hyperthyroidism. Hot nodule and suppressed uptake surrounding thyroid tissue was observed on thyroid scan. We analyzed medical records of 10 patients retrospectively. Results: 9 patients were women and 1 patient was man. Median follow-up duration was 22 months. Most common symptom was neck mass (80%) and the median tumor size was 2.66 cm. 99mTc uptake increased by 6.41% on thyroid scan. All 10 patients refused radioactive iodine therapy and 3 of these denied even operation. In 7 patients underwent thyroidectomy, 4 patients were proved having thyroid malignancy (3 papillary thyroid carcinomas and 1 follicular thyroid carcinoma). Conclusion: In Korean patients, toxic thyroid nodule was likely to accompany thyroid malignancy and radioactive iodine therapy is contraindicated in this case. Therefore, we suggested that surgery has to be considered in the first place in treatment of toxic thyroid nodule.
